Product Description

EMPIRE is the coming-of-age story of Reza Gard, a young boy of the Human Confederation who is swept up in the century-long war with the alien Kreelan Empire. Nightmarish female warriors with blue skin, fangs, and razor sharp talons, the Kreelans have technology that is millennia beyond that of the Confederation, yet they seek out close combat with sword and claw, fighting and dying to honor their god-like Empress.

Captured and enslaved, Reza must live like his enemies in a grand experiment to see if humans have souls, and if one may be the key to unlocking an ages old curse upon the Kreelan race. Enduring the brutal conditions of Kreelan life, Reza and a young warrior named Esah-Zhurah find themselves bound together by fate and a prophecy foretold millennia before they were born.

This is the first part of a trilogy however they read more as a long book and the individual parts do not stand well alone. I am not sure if this is science fiction or fantasy as it is a blend of both. It starts as a science fiction novel on a world that is being attacked by a warrior race the Kreelans it then moves on to develop the world of the Kreelans where the hero of the book Reza learns the ways of the Kreelans at this point it becomes more of a fantasy but returns later to a science fiction style.
The strength of this book is although it is action packed the author has time to develop characters and locations. The world of the Kreelans is vividly described and is quite believable as are the characters. Usually with this type of book it is easy to take side but with this your sympathy is switched between human and Kreelan.
So what is this book; it is space battles, warrior civilizations, and a romance in fact if you like this type of book there is something for everyone if you have not tried this type of book it is well worth trying but you will probably buy the other two. If you want to buy this it is also available in an omnibus version which contains all three books and much cheaper than buying them individually.

This book is absolutely fantastic! There, I said it. If you read no more of this review just know this; you should 100% download this title.

From the opening chapter I was hooked. Mr Hicks does throw you in at the deep end straight away and the start of the book is all the better for it. It soon develops into what can only be described as an Epic.

A point that the author has made is that this is a Sci-Fi book for people who think they don't or won't like the genre. However I do slightly disagree. I am personally in the middle. I do love a good fantasy read but can't remember the last "Sci-Fi" book I read if I am honest. However whilst a sci-fi newbie such as myself was able to pick it up and lose myself in it quickly, I imagine that a sci-fi nut (which Mr Hicks clearly is!) would enjoy it just as much.

However to describe it as a sci-fi book does not do it justice. Empire quite nicely sits in the "coming of age" and Romance genres. In fact so invested do you become in the characters that at a certain part of the book you kind of forget the bigger picture as you become so involved in the relationships.

(So hard to write a spoiler-free review!)

If I did have to pick a fault it would be that I just wanted it to continue longer!
In all seriousness though the only problem I had were some of the names at first as they are quite unusual but you soon get used to them. And really it was probably just me being a bit thick.

Another point I would like to make is what a refreshing change this book was. This is the first indie title I have ever bought and cannot stress what a nice difference it makes. Never again are you restricted to what the publishers think will sell, effectively bundling you with the same old story re-hashed with different settings and characters. A true breath of fresh air!

I cannot wait to read Confederation (which I bought about three minutes after finishing Empire thanks to the kindle app on my phone!)

Hats off to you Mr Hicks! May you continue to write for many years to come!

Good! 20 Aug 2011

This is a very good book. Occasionally the author lapses and the quality declines, but he manages to recover and provide a satisfying read. The strengths of the book are the emotional scenes rather than the action ones, though they are competantly done too. For its price this is a longish book that I heartily recommend.

This book really worked for me I read it over two days, hard to put down. I liked the way it was not too sci fi and shippy. More relationship based. Read more

Normally I'd say free things are worth what you paid for them.

This is a book that breaks that rule very handily. It's easily worth paying some money for. Read more

Kept me reading into the night!!!
A very enjoyable, carefully woven tale, and a great introduction to a fantasy/scifi crossover.
So good, I stayed awake to finish it, and enough that I bought the omnibus.

And every day that you let yourself do just that, just the stuff you have to do to get by, even when youre so tired you cant see straight, you die just a little bit. Not much, not so much that you notice that day, or even the next, but just a little. Your mind starts eroding, and you start forgetting about anything that you used to think was interesting or important, whether anyone else thought it was or not. Pretty soon, all the useless crap that we do here becomes more and more important to you, as if it really had some meaning. "e;

Every time you turn a page you can go somewhere, even someplace thats never been. But anywhere you go is somewhere far away from here. And the best part about it, the part that keeps me alive and sane, is that the words in the books leave a lot of blanks that your mind has to fill in. It makes your mind work without you forcing it to, and you get better and better at it without killing yourself like you have to sometimes in the fields. "e;
