5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book I've Read on Drugs, 23 Feb 2001
By
This review is from: Emperors of Dreams : Drugs in the Nineteenth Century (Paperback)
This is a highly intelligent and well-written book on the history of drugs in the nineteenth century, but in fact the best chapter is the last one where the author moves into the twentieth century and looks at the Prohibition era in the States, drawing some pertinent conclusions for the present. My only quibble is the positive spin put on Freud's contribution to the cocaine debate, which I think mistaken, but that's very much a side issue. Altogether a book I would thoroughly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars a truly mind-expanding history, 28 Nov 2000

This review is from: Emperors of Dreams : Drugs in the Nineteenth Century (Paperback)
Bought this on the strength of Jay's other books and I wasn't disappointed. Rich stories, great ideas and a truly devastating historical analysis of our current drug laws.

4.0 out of 5 stars Drugs: an appeal to reason, 8 Oct 2011

This is yet another cracking read from Mike Jay. I enjoyed it immensely. It isn't widely available and having read it perhaps it isn't surprising. This is an unashamed appeal to review the legality of hard drugs - and perhaps, I think he means, to legalize them. I was mildly pro-review before reading this book and I have to say that I have been won over by Jay's intelligent arguments. There are so many reasons to legalize drugs - not least to gazump organised crime - and surprisingly few drawbacks. Many of the fears imagined to result from legalization have been shown to be historically unprecedented. But Jay isn't some wannabe junkie - he illustrates using many examples and testimony that drug 'trips' are good and bad and that they mostly reflect where the user is in their life and their environment and the circumstances in which they take the drug - e.g. a sordid suburban alley or a controlled tribal ritual accompanied by dance and singing will likely have polar-opposite results. A very timely book that deserves to be more widely read.

PS: In the Kindle version capital Fs are mostly lower-case!
