Book Description

31 Dec 1999 Fremont Jones Mysteries
Caroline Fremont Jones revels in her return to San Francisco, where a new city rises from the ruins of the 1906 earthquake. Even more rewarding is her business partnership and rekindled love with ex-spymaster Michael Archer Kossoff. But their private investigation agency is barely off the ground when Fremont's new friend, lovely but quirky Frances McFadden, becomes their first client--and it's a most troubling case.

The adventurous but skeptical Fremont, lured by Frances to a séance, sees her companion fall into a disturbing trance. Despite the opposition of her powerful, controlling husband, Frances is determined to develop her budding psychic ability. Soon she confides to Fremont that a restless spirit from San Francisco's legendary past has entrusted her with a mission.

But when one of the city's female mediums is murdered, and then another, Fremont's reservations turn to dread. Who has killed these women who wield their own power in the metaphysical world, and why? As Fremont's investigation takes her into the murky depths of spiritualism, she places not only herself, but also her dearest friends in mortal danger.

1.0 out of 5 stars TERRIBLE 24 Aug 1999
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I bought this book mainly for the title (I used to live in San Francisco). What a disappointment - it had no plot, the characters were uninteresting and undeveloped, and it just pointlessly went on and on and on... Needless to say, I'll never buy another Dianne Day book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Better than Bohemian Murders but still lacking 29 Jun 1999
By A Customer
The first two books I found interesting and really enjoyed Fremont Jones. I again found the relationship between Fremont and Michael lacking. Didn't even really necessary to include him in the book. He really didn't add anything to the story. I really enjoyed the introduction of the two new characters very much. How somehow they will stay around and have more development in the future. I was a little disappointed since I already think that I can tell what the story of the next in the series will be comprised of. Seemed very obvious to me. I found the plot lacking and at times again boring, the supernatural plot could have been interesting, but dragged and the ending seemed too incredible to believe. I bought this one in hardcover think I will have to wait in the future to read about Fremont's further adventures,( since I am interested in her characture and the period) until it is released in paperback

Having read all the books in this series, I will continue to do so but this one was a bit lacking. The characters are still intriguing but I think the relationship between Fremont and Michael needs to be finetuned. Fremont's reasons, or perhaps emotions, are not ringing true as to why she won't marry Michael. The plot revolves around seances and the spiritual world which were very important in that era and a wonderful foundation for a mystery. However, the details of the plot were loosely constructed and loosely solved. Michael's dealings with the spy world and Russia are mentioned and would be a great source for the next mystery embroiling Fremont and Michael together.
