"A gripping tale of Wales and Italy, modern and ancient, love and revenge. A smart and charming must-read." Alex Lloyd, Wales News

Product Description

Mac has a vision in which he meets a girl and falls in love. Caught in his obsession are Elen and her would-be suitor Rhys, Mac's wife Kata and his secretary, Carla. But there are darker forces at work. Lust, ambition and romance combine with the life of the South Wales valleys as the present mirrors the past.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read., 20 Sep 2007
This review is from: The Emperor and the Butterfly (Paperback)
The Emperor and the Butterfly is a modern day twist on Welsh mythology.
The entirely believable characters are beautifully drawn, and I was hooked after the first few pages. I honestly, could not put this book down - read it well past my bedtime!
I loved this book so much, it is now being passed round my family and friends.
This is Helen Aileen Davies first novel, and she has proven to be a truely gifted writer.
Read it. You will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Read, 22 April 2007
This review is from: The Emperor and the Butterfly (Paperback)
I received a request to review this book from the author. Helen Aileen Davies is a musician and song writer with a Welsh pop band called "Dragonfall" and we had a grand interchange in Welsh.

"The Emperor and the Butterfly" is Ms. Davies' first novel and a successful first endeavor. The story is taken from Welsh mythology, the story of Macsen Wledig and Elen, his Welsh princess. Only in this case the Roman emperor is an unscrupulous Italian business named Giovanni Maconi, known to his associates as "Mac". Elen is Elen Lloyd, a young woman from South Wales.

The plot develops at a good pace. The book is not overly long, only 212 pages, but the story moves smoothly along these very well written pages. Unlike so many novels today, including Welsh novels, the story is not dark and disturbing. Well, not completely. The young male "hero" Rhys Harris is such a klutz around women, he reminds me of myself when I was younger. And I'm sure many other male readers will find him both sympathetic and unsettling as Ms. Davies' characterization hits close to home.

The novel has its comic moments, its sentimental and lovely moments and its dramatic moments. With the Dream of Macsen and the embedded dream that "Mac" has about his unseen Welsh princess Elen there is the mysticism that a true Welsh story must have. Mac even has a Gypsy grandmother to provide the link to the mystic world. And revenge; let's not forget the fulfilling feeling that honest revenge makes in the reader.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and recommend it to others.
