4.0 out of 5 stars feelings, 17 Nov 2008

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
latest in the series of talking books called doctor who companion chronicles. in these an actor who played a companion to the doctor in a story from the tv show returns to their role to read an all new story featuring the character. the reader will do all the voices in the story save one, which will be voiced by a guest actor. and the reader will usually do an impression of how the actor who played the doctor delivered their lines rather than the way they spoke.

the story in this one is read by louise jameson, who starred alongside tom baker's doctor in the mid 70's as his companion leela. the guest voice in this one is david warner, playing the leader of a strange alien civilisation.

the cd runs for roughly seventy five minutes. the story is in two episode of roughly thirty three minutues each, and the final track has a trailer for the next story in the range [but doesnt actually tell you what it's called or who is in it] and then a short interview with david warner and louise jameson about their work on the story. a good little interview, this, both guests being lively and good talkers.

in this story leela, years after she left the doctor, is reminiscing, and telling another person about a trip she made with the doctor to a world where everyone seemingly lives in perfect harmony. when the doctor is then attacked by a strange creature, leela ends up having to fight in a peculiar sporting contest. and discovering the hidden secret that makes the planet the way it is.

the first episode is interesting set up, and despite being thirty three minutes long rather flies by. the second has a lot going on for leela in the first half, which is very good but you may find yourself wondering exactly when the plot will move on. but don't get impatient because it does. the hidden truth of the planet is an interesting moral dilemma, and the story plays out nicely.

louise jameson has a very nice voice and it's great to listen to her reading this. listen especially for a nicely understated final scene when leela shows she's never forgotten the doctor. david warner also has a great voice and is a very good actor so the quality of listening here is very good indeed.

and unlike a few in this range this never felt overlong. both episodes were just the right length.

nothing special, but a good little doctor who story and a very good listen
