First up - as is probably obvious, this is a covers album. I understand why some bands may do an occasional cover but an entire album full can raise some eyebrows.

If it was any standard album then it'd be a fairly decent attempt at an alternative take on a fairly random assortment of tunes. The problem lies in the fact that A Perfect Circle's own material has a very distinctive atmosphere and style behind it and in trying to apply it to some of these other songs, it fails.

I would stress at this point that there are a number of very good renditions on here.

The good? The Annihilation - anathemic but nicely done. Peace Love and Understanding - takes a while to get going, but the usage of strings works nicely and the song suits Maynard's voice. Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums - this comes across as a version of Pet if i has been written by NiN. I personally really like it - although as a song in it's own right, as the style is so much less flowing than the original.

The not so bad? Imagine - as much as I've heard it, I still like the orginal. This version is far more discordant than the original and drags it's feet a little, but the overall effect isn't bad. Lets Have a War - moves nicely.

The ugly? Gimme Gimme Gimme. In my opinion, it simply doesn't work.

The rest of the tunes are.....pleasant, but none of them stand out - and this is where the problem lies. Mer De Noms, or more recently Thirteenth Step have a lot more feeling and drive behind them. Whilst the style is still noticably A Perfect Circle every other part of this band that I like is lacking. Whereas Mer De Noms was at least a collection of songs with similar style and intention behind them and Thirteenth Step came across more as parts of a story banded together, this one doesn't involve the listener.

Give it a listen, you'll probably enjoy a fair bit of it. It really depends whether you know the orignals or not.

Opinion 2 Mar 2009
Format:Audio CD
To be honest Passive is a song which deserved to be on The Thirteenth step. Apart from that song the rest of the album is tosh, APC are not suited for cover songs due to the genius of all the other material and i feel that this album was just a quick patch job just to complete their album deal so they were not tied into a contract with their label anymore. makes sense right.

Decent cover album 2 Mar 2008
Format:Audio CD
For me, eMotive starts at track 3. There are some dark and nasty covers like Imagine, which Maynard successfully manages to murder in cold blood. Passive is a return to their old form. And covers of What's Going On, Freedom Of Choice and When The Levee Breaks give old songs some new life. As beautiful as APC have been, ever.

Well done
Nice compilation of songs (imagine, what's going on...). Some new, like "passive" done with part of NIN, incredible song. Great (and the last) job from APC.

Very strong album of covers
The received wisdom is that their first album was great, the second one good but a bit so-so overall; and that this, their third album, was a dud. Read more

this album is actually amazing. sure it takes alot of getting used to but the combination of piano and guitar make this just an entirely new type of music.

Its a war album. What can you expect?
This album only really has 1 song worth listening to. Yes that song is passive. They really screwed up imagine, not that i liked the lennon one. Many songs are just noise. Read more
