Book Description

10 May 2011
The only thing you can be sure you can move around the world is your child's ability to increase his or her interpersonal skills. In today's global world, each of us is searching for effective tools that can help our children to thrive. Emotional Resilience for the Expat Child provides a step-by-step guide that is designed to increase a child's emotional vocabulary and emotional intelligence. Doing this will enable your child to achieve his or her fullest potential. The bond between an adult and child is key to the psychological health of the child. For the expatriate child, this bond is more vital than ever. This workbook has been created for you to use together and will provide the perfect place to connect for you and your family. With easily understood and practical steps any parent can apply, you can start to create and enjoy your family's 'emotion stories'. This book will help you to develop the mutually respectful and loving relationships with your kids that you've always wanted. Working on these 'emotion stories', all children can develop a strong sense of personal narrative; they will find their own 'voice' and in so doing will grow into confident, happy teenagers. When a child feels happy and confident, he will be more likely to construct and communicate his emotions. The richer his vocabulary is in emotions, the more competent and powerful he will be in reflecting on his behavior and how his actions and interactions are intertwined. Well-written in an engaging, conversational tone, this book is sensible, straightforward and based on the experiences of expat families. It will give your child what he or she needs to understand and express today in order to grow into a caring, emotional intelligent adult tomorrow.

4.0 out of 5 stars Emotional Resilience 10 Jun 2011
Format:Paperback
Guilt inevitably afflicts all expat parents when they relocate their families around the world.

Despite the enormous advantages and privileges growing up as a global nomad, it's sometimes hard to reconcile this with an unhappy child, distraught at the prospect of leaving friends behind and moving country yet again.

Emotional Resilience and the Expat Child seeks to help parents prepare children for their adventures abroad and ensure they can express and articulate the complex emotions at work when relocating.

Julia Simens is an American educator and consultant with a focus on international relocation and in 20 years of living in five different continents she `has helped many children and families adjust to their global lifestyle.'

Identifying key emotions at the root of distress and teaching children to communicate these feelings in words and pictures, helps youngsters confront the emotional difficulties as they learn to cope with each transition.

To accompany the theory, Simens has included practical exercises throughout the chapters for both parents and children to work through.

This is a book that will appeal to parents with an interest in the psychology of raising children overseas, and using this knowledge to help them cope with the emotional upheaval of leaving things behind and packing up to move on again.

This book is essential reading for expat parents, grandparents, teachers and anyone working with children who live in a global environment.

Whilst the book is aimed at families with younger children (up to approximately 8 years of age) it contained so much background information that anyone interested in this little researched area of expat life will take something from it.

The book applies the theory and puts it into practice with a program for parents and children to work through together. Simens supplies the language to illustrate each emotion through real stories told in a solid framework, which make for an entertaining read on its own. The creation of family rituals involving all family members is a large part of this program, again illustrated with real case histories.

This book has a wealth of information and advice pulled together over 20 years of working with expat children and international relocation, and a proven program to help families raise emotionally articulate, well-balanced adults with. What greater gift could we give our children?

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect gift for the expat parent 23 May 2013
By Lois Bushong - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is a wonderful resource for the expat parent. Julia does an amazing job of making the concept of Attachment Theory understandable to the lay person. I love her style of writing as it is very clear in educating the reader, she gives most interesting examples and then brings it all home with concrete activities to help the parent further explore that particular concept with their child. Her book is a must read for the expat parent, or any parent for that matter. I love it!! I only wish it was on the required reading list for all parents. Thanks, Julia, for sharing your insights in such a practical book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical and Useful 28 Dec 2012
By Julia Pavlicek - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I liked the way the book was written and all the pictures and inserts were well done. I especially liked that it was written as a sort of work book with exercises after every chapter to get the person thinking. I think this would be a good book to do as a mother's playdate group or book club by doing a chapter a week and doing the written homework and then coming together to discuss the chapter and the answers the individual mothers (or fathers) came up with in the homework.
