Jane Wharam's book `Emotional Intelligence' is a great personal development book and I really enjoyed reading it. There have been many books written on this fascinating topic, some of which I have read, and Wharam's is high on my list of favourites. I like her writing style and the competent way she imparts her knowledge.
Perhaps one of the most talked about books on this topic was written by Daniel Goleman, who Wharam refers to in her book. Wharam's take on the same subject however is much easier to comprehend and this meant I got so much more from her book than I did from similar books I've read.
I particularly liked the section titled `What Are Emotions' which talks about immediate, or instinctive, emotions and secondary emotions which require some degree of thought. The book explains how to recognise these emotional signs in ourselves and in others and looks at the emotional skills we may need to learn. Sections on `emotional vocabulary' and `empathy' were also great chapters that provided some very useful insights for me.
The book includes some self assessment questions which were incredibly thought provoking, and there are also short exercises throughout the book that helped the information I was reading `stick'. It's a fascinating subject and having a high degree of emotional intelligence, some would say, is more important that having a high IQ. I have to agree with this as it seems emotional intelligence may be the backbone of a happy and fulfilling life.
Jane Wharam's first book hits the spot and I highly recommend it. I very much look forward to reading more of Wharam's work.
