Book Description

11 Dec 2009 0470747641 978-0470747643
At some point in their lives, most people will have thought: “He should never have said that” “How could she treat me this way?” “I feel guilty when I remember what I said to him” “I’m so angry I can’t bear it” Usually, we don’t feel that we can discuss these hurtful emotions, such as guilt, anger or jealousy, with our friends and families, let alone go to a GP for advice on dealing with them. We’re a nation that bottles things up, dismissing anger, frustration, hatred and guilt as largely insignificant to our minds and bodies. But powerful emotions like these do affect us in a long–term way, not only mentally but also physically, and it’s important to know how to get them under control before our health really suffers. This easy–to–follow, plain–English guide shows you why and how emotions can leave a physical scar, and talks about various life factors and influences that can lead to emotional stress. It will help you heal your emotional traumas with a toolkit of strategies, and allows you to take care of your health with a practical, hands–on approach. Emotional Healing For Dummies covers: PART 1: INTRODUCING EMOTIONAL HEALING   Chapter 1: Understanding Emotional Healing Chapter 2: Exploring the Physiology of Emotion Chapter 3: Tuning into Emotions PART 2: EMOTIONS AND YOUR BODY Chapter 4: You are What you Eat Chapter 5: Body Rhythms Chapter 6: Physical Strategies for Emotional Healing PART 3: EMOTIONAL HEALING FOR REAL LIFE Chapter 7: Mapping the Emotional Environment Chapter 8: Facing up to Emotional Challenges Chapter 9: Managing Relationships Chapter 10: Strategies for Getting through Tough Times Chapter 11: Life’s Transitions PART 4: THE EMOTIONAL HEALING TOOLKIT Chapter 12: Thinking Strategies for Emotional Healing  Chapter 13: Mindfulness Practices to Rebalance Chapter 14: Lifestyle Strategies for Emotional Healing Chapter 15: Becoming the Emotionally Healed Person PART 5: TAKING YOUR HEALING TO ANOTHER LEVEL Chapter 16: Planning to Manage Emotions in the Future Chapter 17: Inspiring Healing in Others Chapter 18: Helping your Child to Heal  PART 6: THE PART OF TENS     Chapter 19: Ten Ways to Heal Emotional Wounds Chapter 20 Ten Ways to Stay Positive Chapter 21: Ten Exercises for Emotional Healing

5.0 out of 5 stars Something different 2 April 2010
Format:Paperback
The world is not short of self-improvement books - largely American - designed to help us make the best of ourselves. Most of these offer structured programs and/or exercises with catchy mnemonics. Almost all invoke the secular trinity of 'mind, body, spirit'. EH for Dummies is a refreshing change from the norm on two counts. First the authors are British and have impressive credentials. Second, the writing is crisp, literate and easy to assimilate. It avoids the exhortatory and exclamation mark rich style typical of the genre. This makes the book culturally accessible and less tiring. To be sure the mind body spirit concept is there as a keystone and there is a toolkit. However, issues information and examples are well-chosen and pragmatic. This is a book that can be dipped into or studied. It would certainly repay serious attention. If our society is broken, EH for D if widely read and its precepts internalised by enough individuals would certainly help the reparative process.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can honestly say it worked for me 3 Mar 2010
Format:Paperback
Although I didn't buy this book for myself, I read it from cover to cover and completed some of the excercises. A few days after finally putting it down, something happened in my professional life that, previously, would almost certainly have sent me into a downwards spiral. But it didn't. So I can honestly say, 'it worked for me'. I'm a neurofeedback practitioner who had been looking for an intelligent, informative, accessible, and friendly guide that I could recommend to my clients (to complement and enhance the work I was doing with them at a neuronal level). This book is all those things and more. And it's a book that pretty much anyone would benefit from reading, whether they think they could do with emotional healing or not. Complex ideas and information are delivered with ease, gently leading the reader towards a greater capacity for well-being; there is a charm and an integrity about this book that makes it a pleasure to read. A touch breezy here and there, perhaps... but nevertheless, I believe this is an important contribution. Thank you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Genuine self-help 3 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
David Beales and Helen Whitten, both experts in their field, have distilled years of experience and wisdom into this highly readable book. Eschewing the New Age hysterical tone that spoils so much output in this genre, they have produced clear, often witty, and always helpful routes from one's personal mire. Highly recommended.
