After growing up with the Muppets (not literally), i cannot believe i never heard of this until last year. Three of my favourite things in the world are Jim Henson, Christmas and Otters. And here they are all combined.
Not only that but it was made in the late 70's before the world of animation etc went all commercial and wacky.
So is it any good? You bet your sweet potato it is. The amazon description above outlines the story pretty well so i won't repeat it. But this really was everything i hoped it would be. Warm, natural, deep south, down home country Otters in a wintry riverbank world, with ramshackle shacks and jumpers, some great music and even a talent show full of brilliant characters.
Plus the appropriately festive message of love. Not too sugary a message of course - this is Jim Henson after all. So you get your messages of love delivered in a perfect package of smart, knowing, Henson humour, much like The Simpsons.
Emmet Otter is like a cross between those off piste, smaller puppet, musical worlds you sometimes get in the Muppet Show, Wind in the Willows set on the Mississippi in winter and the coolest episode of Fraggle Rock.
It's gone straight into my all time top 5 essential Christmas viewing. My only complaints are i wish it was longer (it's just under an hour -long enough, but i want more) and i also wish they'd made a whole series out of it. It would have been one of the best kids tv shows ever.
But for now, pull up a big mince pie and drift down the river to the spirited, twanging sounds of Emmet Otter and friends.
