Initially released only in the band's native Sweden, The Cardigans' 1994 debut, named after a British soap opera, is purely a pop delight. At first listen the songs sound as cheery and bouncy as the best in bubblegum pop, but there is an underlying melancholy never far from the music's perky surface. And as some of their titles might hint, songs like "Sick And Tired" and "Black Letter Day" are downright dark.
Thealbum's highest point is the intoxicating, purely joyful "Rise And Shine", though the Cardigans' brilliant cover of Black Sabbath's "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" is a conceptual masterpiece. This Minty Fresh reissue contains a second disc of highlights from the original Swedish version of LIFE, not found on the reconfigured US edition, including the delightful "Pikebubbles" and the nearly 11-minute multipart operetta "Closing Time".

This is the Cardigans earliest album available, and it is one of their best. Some of the tracks on this album are on the UK version of Life, but those which are not are outstanding. Cardigans music always tends to put a different spin on things and has a slightly different outlook on life. Rise and shine is the cheeriest track on the album and is the ultimate feel good tune to wake you up in the morning. Some of the tracks are nestled in the slighlty surreal Cardigan category, but this is a very good thing as stylistically there isn't much which comes close. Other tracks such as Cloudy Sky paint a picture of someone who would give too much and give the wrong thing "I'd catch some stars for you, just you... don't tell me you want the rain from a cloudy sky" and In the afternoon is a cosy look at the the world viewed from sleepy, lazy eyes. The best track on the album is After all... with Nina Persson's haunting vocals painting a picture of regret and the almost musicless track feels very personal, just don't listen to it alone in the dark! All in all fantastic - hard to fault.

Dated 1994, Emmerdale is the first of the Cardigans albums and is a beautiful collection of pure vocals and effectively understated jazz/funk riffs. Probably the bands most unsettling and surreal album, Emmerdale employs quirky synchopations with high floating vocals from a young Nina Persson. Here her voice is slightly less developed and refined which, to any Cardigans fan, is a welcome change from the polished sound of Gran Turismo.
The mere fragility of her voice echoes well the insecurites behind the albums text and it's very difficult to single out any particular track for analysis as the Cardigans take us in a journey through sunny Stockholm in the late summer, early autumn.
The air of simplicity and freedom in their music is a welcome break from the coarsly stated complexities that much modern pop tries to potray and this is reflected in the artistry of the work. Simply presented, the front cover shows a dog galloping on green grass with a blue sky behind. On the reverse we are given an image of the band soaking up late afternoon sun, relaxing. Both pictures reflect well the image the Cardigans have created for themselves and displays their maturity as artists not only for the music but the package as a whole; an important factor.
The irony of the album, a constant in their work, is created through the apparrently innocent simple vocals and riffs. However, this is not the case as orchestral arrangements and bizzare instrumentation, gradually introduced, begin to haunt the magical beauty of the album. Yet the band do well to maintain this air of simplicity as the album progresses fluidly eventually climaxing in an, possibly unexpected(?), orchestral breakdown.
This exceptionally executed performance/collection deserves more respect as an album in its own right and I would reccommend it to anyone with a taste for the rurreal. The deeper you dig the more you find. 5/5
