Biography

The desert is a place of hardship and subtle beauty, a stark world that reveals its secrets slowly and carefully. Life in the desert is resilient and strong, and the people are gentle giants among the sand, storms, and sun. For Saharan blues band Tinariwen, the desert is their home, and their hypnotic and electrifying guitar rock reflects complex realities of their homebase in North West ... Product Description

Product Description

Emmaar' was recorded in the Joshua Tree desert, California, due to political instability in their country - the first time the band have recorded away from their homeland. "It still had to be recorded in a desert," says bassist Eyadou Ag Leche. "We would like to live in peace in the North of Mali, but this is very difficult, there is no administration, no banks, no food, no gas. Joshua Tree is in the high desert of California, we love all the desert, these are places where we feel good to live and to create."

Recorded over three weeks in a home studio, 'Emmaar' has a distinctly organic feel. "We weren't in a proper studio or outside in the desert like 'Tassili'," Ag Leche says. "We built a studio in a big house in Joshua Tree. Everybody in the same room, with no separation. We wanted something which sounded natural and live." Guests on the album include Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, Matt Sweeney from Chavez, Nashville fiddler Fats Kaplin, and poet Saul Williams.

Deluxe CD format includes three bonus tracks and is packaged in a thick board digisleeve.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Hypnotic Album 15 Mar 2014
By JRE
Format:Audio CD
There is no doubt that on this album Tinariwen have amended their sound, no doubt as a result of recording in California during their hopefully short-lived exile from their homeland. This has probably made it a little more "acceptable" to a Western audience,, but to my mind has made it among their very best. There is more space in the sound this time, which highlights the intricate interplay between the instruments. The hypnotic rhythms and their unique guitar sound are intact. Reading the translated lyrics, the themes are of exile and loss and warn that peace imposed by force cannot last. Yet these downbeat sentiments are presented in music that uplifts and which it is impossible not to dance to, even sat in the car!
I can't wait to see them live again this July. For me, Tinariwen are one of the two best bands around at the moment (the other being the completely different The National).

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic 5 Jun 2014

I have been introduced to this by Robert Plant [not personally, unfortunately]. The music is wonderful, so hypnotic and it doesn't matter that you have no idea what the lyrics are! Nice touch, this CD includes a brief description of the theme of each track. Loving this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tinariwen - latest album 9 Mar 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I like the idea of a crowd source funding for an album by independent artists. I have enjoyed the album and sorry that I wasn't able to be part of the World Tour as they are not coming to Australia - that I know of?

Enjoy!
