Product Description

In the closing years of this Pontiff's reign, Morris West tells the story of the next Papal election and of certain characters who may well have a part to play in it. Most important of these is the eminence of the title, Luca, Cardinal Rossini, a man who suffered torture and degradation as a young priest in Argentina, who lived in exile in Rome and was promoted to high office in the Vatican. By his own admission he is a flawed man, but he is still a man of power and a possible candidate for election. There is, however, much more to this novel than Vatican politics. Love and passion, tenderness and intrigue, heady suspense, and high drama all are here.

Are you interested in the Catholic church especially as witnessed by the hierarchy in Rome? Are you interested in euthanasia? Are you interested in the effect of love? Read Eminence to put yourself at the heart of one of the greatest institutions on earth. I did not know whether Luca would become pope or not till the final paragraph. What a thriller! I enjoyed every monute of this book and recommend it wholeheartedly. Interesting to note that it clearly has been read at high levels in the church and has provoked real debate as to the possibility of an incapacitated pontiff remaining in office. There does not seem any way to get rid of him. Interesting?

A "must read" 16 Aug 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
EMINENCE is a breathtaking journey through the political fabric of the Vatican during a crucial period, set in the near future. The hierarchy wrestles for direction in the lead up of the election of a new Pontiff. Morris West's novel is clearly a "must read" for anyone enjoying a well written, compelling novel.

While you are masterly entertained by the author, he uses skilfully a highly accomplished structure of the novel as his Trojan Horse to present compelling argument to sketch out the fundamental problems facing the Roman Catholic Church, and Christianity at large, everywhere. West's insight and maturity takes you on the path to new thinking on essential questions on spirituality, traditional faith, and illuminates our own search for God, and life's meaning in a new age.

I hope it becomes compulsory reading for high office bearers of the Roman Church, as they soon might need to wrestle with the election of a successor to the ancient throne of Peter.

As to the wisdom of a great writer, we ought to be truly grateful.

I found the book quite rivetting with an excellent plot. Truely a book worthy of the standard of its author.
