This is an excellent book to use as a reference for teaching children the social graces of table manners in several settings! 7 Feb. 2010
By D. Fowler - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Many times kids, and adults for that matter, are very uncertain about how to act in certain social situations. If you have overheard someone say that a certain person "has the manners of a duck" you probably are grateful they aren't talking about you. Whew! If you want to be the one that everyone is watching to see which fork to use or how to eat a certain type of unusual food, this is one book you might want to take a look at. You can easily learn how to avoid using a "boarding house reach," you'll quickly learn about "polite drinking" and of course you'll learn about those forks. If you don't know how to set a table, let alone what to do with a complicated table setting, you're going to learn that and many other things in this book.

Some things like "double dipping" are obvious no nos to some, but not as obvious to kids. You'll quickly learn that anything gross is simply something to be avoided at all costs. No one wants to be remembered as a pig at a party, but rather someone who is suave and has manners. You will learn what to do when you spill something, how to react when you find something unwelcome in your food, how to engage others in conversation at the table, you'll learn about manners you need in different types of settings (pot luck, picnics, buffets, etc.), how to be considerate of other religious and cultural observations in someone's home and much more!

This is an excellent book to use as a reference for teaching children the social graces of table manners in several settings. Many of these suggestions are basic and instinctive, but for many if they are not taught they can be embarrassing to the child and others. For example it is wise "not to make negative comments about the food as you pass by the table." This comment was in reference to a pot luck dinner and could be very hurtful to someone, especially if they made the dish and just happen to overhear a crass comment. I found the material in this book was not only entertaining, but also very educational. I did note the "how to" of how to act when a host family says grace before a meal was mentioned twice. The religious or cultural aspect of others is very important for children to understand. This easy to read, fun and interesting book has a lot to offer both kid and adult alike!

This was comprehensive, and easy to read. I have been reading portions of the book to my second grade students, and they love it!
Their parents are very impressed, and learning facts themselves.

My kids won't read it..... 11 Oct. 2014
By ShopGirl - Published on Amazon.com

The book is im sure very helpful in teaching your kids table manners. But I expected it to be a little bit more entertaining in terms of drawings and cartoon illustrations. My 11 yr old and 7 yr old boys refused to read because it is "boring" and has to much content. In comparison they do have tons of manners book that they enjoy reading directed to apeal to their age group with easy vocabulary and lots of drawings. Im hoping I can re-introduce this book again in a few years. In the meantime, it is sitting on the shelf collecting dust. A bit disappointed. ..
