Book Description

Emily Starr has never known what it is to be unloved. But when her father dies, she is left in the care of her mother's family. Emily is a stranger to the proud Murrays, none of whom think they can cope with such a heartbroken, headstrong girl. They decide to draw lots for her, and Emily is sent to live at New Moon with stern Aunt Elizabeth, the head of the clan. Kind Aunt Laura and friendly, eccentric Cousin Jimmy also live at New Moon, though, so she is not without hope.

Emily is enchanted by New Moon, but cannot believe she will ever belong there. With her lively imagination and dreams of being a famous writer, she seems to have a talent for scandalising her family. Before long, though, she has made firm friends: Ilse, a tomboy with a blazing temper, Teddy, an aspiring artist, and Perry, the ambitious houseboy. She brings so much life to New Moon, perhaps one day even Aunt Elizabeth will consider herself lucky to have 'won' Emily.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enchanting 28 Feb. 2015
Format:Paperback
I was enchanted by this often very moving book (the first of a trilogy), with its sensitive portrayal of the child heroine (and other children), as well as adults, and its beautiful descriptions of the landscape on Prince Edward Island, Canada. Its values are, of course, largely and refreshingly (for our modern times) Christian, as you might expect for the era (first published in 1923). Here is an example of her landscape description: ‘…and autumn passed, and winter came with its beautiful bare-limbed trees, and soft pearl-grey skies that were slashed with rifts of gold in the afternoons, and cleared to a jewelled pageantry of stars over the wide, white hills and valleys around New Moon.’ But this review doesn't do the book justice - I loved it (and I am 65, but was lent it by a 14-year-old).

5.0 out of 5 stars A portrait of the artist as a young writer... 18 May 2014
By HMS Warspite - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
"Emily of New Moon" is the beginning of Lucy Maud Montgomery's moving trilogy about a young writer who may bear an astonishing resemblance to the author herself. The dark-haired, gray-eyed Emily Byrd Starr is stubborn and imaginative, and has a gift for writing. The death of her beloved father leaves her dependent on the charity of her proud Murray relatives at the family farm of New Moon on Prince Edward Island, Canada. Her maiden Aunt Elizabeth takes up the duty of raising Emily by the strictest of rules; she and Emily will do repeated battle over Emily's need to express herself.

"Emily of New Moon" is an absolutely engaging story. Author Lucy Maud Montgomery adroitly introduces Emily to new relatives, playmates, life lessons, and adult mentors who provide varying degrees of encouragement (or discouragement) for her writing talents. Along the way, Montgomery prepares the ground for the follow-on books. She cleverly sets up future romantic dynamics among Emily and her playmates, and a problematic mentorship relationship with an older man whose motivatation might be suspect. The most significant plot resolution of "Emily of New Moon" is an incident which appears to demonstrate that Emily is "fey", that she has the ability to see "beyond the curtain" of everyday reality.

Lucy Maud Montgomery's "Emily" trilogy is thought to reflect the famed author's emotionally starved childhood and difficult apprenticeship as a writer in a way the happier "Anne of Green Gables" series never did. "Emily of New Moon" has a darker tone than the "Anne" series, but is every bit as entertaining, and is highly recommended to Montgomery's fans.
5.0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL copy of an excellent book. 27 Jun. 2015
By Ashley H. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a wonderful book--Emily is a fantastic heroine who I wish I had read about when I was a young girl. Even so, I loved reading about her at 25! Beyond that, I can't stop staring at this copy of the novel--the cover and back are every bit as beautiful as they look in the image here, if not more so. All around, I highly recommend this if you're considering purchasing!!
