I first read Emily (originally called Circles), when it was serialised in a teenage magazine in the 70s. I kept the copies for many years, then lost them in a move. I was devastated, and unaware that Jilly had released it under another name. Thank goodness for the Internet! I have now ordered Emily and cannot wait till it's delivered on Friday of this week. I thought the humour was wonderful, the pathos was perfect, and although I am probably a little past it by now, Rory Balniel conjours up all sorts of naughties in my menopausal mind!!!

Like "Harriet and Octavia", these two stories contained within the one book are fun and witty. Bella is an actress with a secret past, and Emily is a toned-down version of Octavia (in my opinion anyway!). Both of them have some men of slightly dubious character in their lives, and some equally dodgy women! Both stories are very readable and, at times, laugh-out-loud funny!

I've read all of Jilly Cooper's 'Rutshire Chronicles', and 9/10 times she's not disappointed.
Therefore I decided to read her other novels- Emily being the fist, was better than I expected...Emily is both a lovable character and an annoying one (she's a little silly).
I felt sorry for her when her marriage to Rory starts to go wrong, and shocked at several revelations throughout the book. Overall I was happy with the outcome at the end :)
I finished it in a few hours, it's very brief, but not fleeting- You get to know Emily, Rory, Coco, Finn and all the other characters exceptionally well, which shows that Cooper is good at character building. Also she never fails to set the scene and the description of the Highlands is wonderful. Jilly also proves she can write a great novel without include heap fulls of sex (something some people criticize her for).
This is just the book to curl up with on the sofa on a rainy day- Pure escapism in a small dose.

Great quick read.
Really enjoyable and quick read. I love the short Jilly Cooper books. Delivery of this item was swift and it was in great condition.

If you enjoy legitimising domestic abuse, read this
I was absolutely horrified by this book, it essentially chronicles an abusive relationship with absolutely no question of whether Rory's actions towards Emily are wrong. Read more

Since Jilly Cooper is known as something of a Jackie Collins - for sleaze and glamour at least - I was a bit disappointed with this book. Read more
