Emily Dickinson (1830-86) was born in Amherst, Massachussetts, where she lived most of her life as a recluse, seldom leaving the house or receiving visitors. She published just a handful of poems in her lifetime, her first collection appearing posthumously in 1890.
About the Author
Ted Hughes (1930-1998) was born in Yorkshire. His first book, The Hawk in the Rain, was published in 1957 by Faber and Faber and was followed by many volumes of poetry and prose for adults and children. He received the Whitbread Book of the Year for two consecutive years for his last published collections of poetry, Tales from Ovid (1997) and Birthday Letters (1998). He was Poet Laureate from 1984, and in 1998 he was appointed to the Order of Merit.

The elusive Emily Dickinson left a vast heritage of unique poetry. Which have been published in its totality in The Complete Poems. But since these also comprised drafts and sketches the quality is somewhat uneven.
At her best Emily wrote some of the best poems in the history of human kind. With a transcendent beauty and a wry sense of humour too. Touching the stars in a way few artists are capable of. Pure genius.
And to the credit of Ted Hughes, he has - with a keen and empathetic eye - really selected the cream of the crop.
If you only want one book of the grande Emily this could very well be it.
