This bilingual book, part of a series on aspects of Nolde's work, is rich in background information as well as in photos of his flower paintings. He worked in oils but also in water colours of unsurpassed intensity, much of his inspiration coming from his own gardens which are described in some detail. Many sketches are included among the 64 photos though I for one would have preferred more examples of his evocative and intense water colours. This is where he excels and conveys his fascination with the daringly colourful essence of floral life.

I am a huge Emil Nolde fan having first been introduced to his art and museum as an exchange student in Germany. When I saw this book, I knew I had to have it to add to my collection. I learned German while I was an exchange student, so I was surprised and glad that this book is printed in columns of German and English (great way to keep my German up to date).
There is a long history of his career in the art world- and the influences from the area that he grew up in and the various locations he lived and practiced his art. So it's not just about his flowers but about his life. I was pleased to read this about him as it was information I wasn't aware of.
The color reproductions are excellent- the vibrant colors definitely come through.
You will really enjoy this book-
