Product Description

Review

'Averil King has written an enthusiastic account of a complex man... A big Nolde exhibition is surely overdue: this book certainly whets the appetite.' --(Andrew Lambirth, Country Life)

'The vibrant expressionist canvases of the German painter Emil Nolde are little known in the Anglophone world. Averil King's study, the first in English on the artist, looks set to increase Nolde's profile.' --(Apollo)

About the Author

Averil King's area of interest is the art of northern Europe and Russia in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. She has written about the Russian landscape painter Isaak Levitan, friend of Chekhov; the innovative Bremen artist Paula Modersohn-Becker; and now the celebrated German Expressionist, Emil Nolde. King is a regular contributor to Apollo Magazine, Art Newspaper and Country Life.

Ive simply had to write this review because i see that MER has rated the book 2/5 which seems completely unfair to me.
'Emil Nolde: Artist of the Elements' is a long-overdue introduction to the artists work. It is A4 in size, 144 pages long and illustrated throughout with good colour reproductions. The book is divided into 11 chapters and does indeed cover all areas of the artists oeuvre, so you get still lifes, flowers and gardens, religious paintings, and quite a lot of landscapes. It is not an in-depth, comprehensive review of Nolde's landscapes, maybe the front cover gives that impression, though i wasn't disappointed by the 23 landscapes included. As far as i'm aware no book covers all his landscapes, but if you buy this book along with 'My Wonderland from Sea to Sea' and track down some Sotherby's catalogues on German Art then you'll be getting close.

A good introduction to Emile Nolde.I have not looked at other books about this artist so can not make any comparisons.Has a good variety of illustrations from every stage of his career nearly all in colour. The book also has a few photos of the artist. At the start of the book there is a short chronology.

I chose this rating because the tile is misleading........It's about his many subjects.......and not about the "elements" as suggested by the title and the front cover picture........It was a jumble and lacked focus............That is why I returned it.....MM.........Am awaiting a refund........It went by the cheapest mode of transport.........Mary Murray.
