4.0 out of 5 stars dated but funny and charming, 22 Aug 2008

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Astrid Lindgren is most famous for her Pippi Longstocking series which has never been out of print in the UK, but she wrote many more childrens books which, I am delighted to say are now starting to be reprinted in English. Emil and the Great Escape is the first in a series of books about a naughty boy and his exploits, which his mother catalogues in a series of blue notebooks for posterity.

I used to read the Emil books when I was a child and wanted to read them to my children. I am delighted that they are finally back in print. They are rather dated, imagine something along the lines of Milly Molly Mandy but set in Sweden and with more naughtiness and you will have the picture.

My children are really enjoying the stories even though there are a few bits they don't really understand, mostly to do with Swedish places and money and culture, but Emil's essential and universal mischievousness still makes them laugh just as it did me at their age. It's nice that this book is small boy friendly too.

In this book we are introduced to Emil, find out why he sends his sister up the farm flag pole and eats all the party sausage and how he stops a notorious thief at the fete.
