"A comprehensive and clearly laid out text. It covers every aspect of emergency medicine from sprained 5th metatarsals to penetrating trauma." Northwing, Sheffield Medical Students′ Magazine

“This is a good book to use as a supplementary text in general or as the core text for a placement in trauma and emergency medicine. Useful facts are highlighted readily and essential information is presented well.” Medical Student, Oxford University

“This is one of the best textbooks on the market for Emergency Medicine. It has a clear logical approach to the topics and is thoroughly readable. The book contains all the latest information on how to diagnose and manage acute medical problems. Any medical student or foundation doctor can not afford to be without this book.” Medical Student, Keele University

Product Description

Lecture Notes: Emergency Medicine covers all the core aspects of accident and emergency work. It concentrates on the essentials with "immediate action" first and then subsequent treatments. It has been written for students and trainees in accident and emergency medicine by two outstanding physicians. It also provides an invaluable source of information and instruction for anyone, in particular primary care doctors and nurses, who needs to know how to diagnose and manage the early stages of acute medical problems. This edition has been updated to cover the latest resuscitation guidelines.

The text has been well reviewed in its previous two editions:

As a starting text for understanding of vital aspects for emergency medicine, it is simple to read, logically presented and provides relevant background to any given medical crisis...Greatly useful as a clinical reference."
The Gubernaculum, Melbourne University′s Medical Society Newsletter

"...covers the topics well in a detailed manner, with pertinent and informative diagrams and examples."
MAD, The Student Magazine for Medics & Dentists at Bart′s and the London

"This book will appeal not only to junior staff in accident and emergency medicine but also students, nurses, and anyone with a casual interest that exceeds the knowledge of first aid."
British Medical Journal

"The authors have succeeded admirably in their task...invaluable for doctors staffing accident and emergency departments...a ready source of reliable information."
British Book News

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for Emergency Medicine, 5 Dec 2006
By L. Barraclough (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
With upcoming finals I am a recent convert to the Lecture Notes series of textbooks. This book on Emergency Medicine did not disappoint. It has an extremely clear, logical approach to the subject material. There are plenty of summary boxes throughout the text that contain invaluable snippets of information and management plans for acute medical problems. I also was pleased to see the 2005 Resuscitation Council UK algorithms included in this latest edition. The book contains an extensive number of topics including ENT, Opthalmology and Obs / Gynae which makes it a good value 'all-rounder'. My only criticism would be that the book could do with slightly more diagrams, however those that are included are relevant and clear. I would recommend this book to all clinical medical students and foundation doctors doing placements in emergency medicine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spot on!, 9 Mar 2008
By DS McConnell (Norwich, Norfolk United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

Well laid-out, clear and an easy to read style - this addition to the lecture notes series is sufficient for an A&E rotation. Fully up-to-date with ALS and Resus guidelines, it also covers specialities as well as the general aspects of emergency medicine. Radiographs would have been a welcome addition but the clear diagrams perform adequately. Perfect for A&E placements but also very useful for finals revision.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very readable, very interesting, 14 Dec 2006
This book follows a nice logical structure and is thoroughly readable throughout. The 3rd edition includes all the recently updated protocols. If you like the Lecture Notes series (and I do) then you will like this book. There is no pointless overuse of meaningless diagrams, something which I find very annoying in textbooks. There are very useful text boxes on procedures or potential stumbling blocks etc throughout, while the main text is well written and easy to follow. This is extrememly useful for A&E preparation, highlighting approach as well as important topics. Inevitably there is some orthopaedic stuff that is not included, but the book still gives you all the essentials. Overall, I think this is well worth the read.

4.0 out of 5 stars A decent text
This is as good a text as any for what can be a fairly diffuse attachment in Emergency medicine. Also good for trauma placements and with enough additional information to satisfy... Read more
