Cardiac emergencies remain the mainstay of acute non-selective medical admissions. This handy-sized pocket guide provides key, succinct information and advice to manage a wide range of cardiology emergencies and `urgencies' and will be a useful prop for junior doctors at all levels. The first chapter on cardiovascular collapse and management of cardiogenic shock sets the tone of the book with clear bullet points, easy to read management plans and highlights key information in boxes. It is then divided into three sections, starting with common cardiovascular symptoms offering a range of differential diagnosis. Thereafter follows short sections on both common cardiac emergencies such as acute coronary syndromes, acute heart failure, arrhythmias and also robust advice on managing the more esoteric cardiology on-call quandaries from the labour ward and from anaesthetists. The final section is devoted to practical procedures and electrocardiogram (ECG) recognition. With the motto "there is always time to think" this section is particularly useful in reminding the junior doctor how to undertake practical techniques such as temporary pacing, but aptly states that it is not a substitute for seeking support and help when needed. The book is peppered throughout with good quality illustrations including relevant transthoracic and transoesphageal echocardiograms, magnetic resonance imaging scans and ECG rhythm strips in addition to cartoon illustrations to help understand cardiac anatomy. All in all a well balanced, clear, practical guide, offering structured management plans and useful tips for assessing and treating acute cardiological conditions.
