Review

This book does a nice job of meeting its objectives as a pocket reference for use on hospital rounds (Dr P Yelamanchili, Oschner Clinic Foundation )

Product Description

Acute cardiology problems often need quick, appropriate, diagnosis and treatment. With the increasing complexity and rapidly-changing nature of available therapies, knowing which to use and in what situation can be difficult. The freshly updated Emergencies in Cardiology, Second Edition, provides an easily-accessible guide to diagnosing and managing acute cardiovascular problems, incorporating both symptom-based and disease-based sections. Cross-referenced to the Oxford Handbook of Cardiology, this handbook allows rapid access to accurate, up-to-date information. There are specific sections on the management of cardiovascular problems in pregnancy and adult congenital heart disease, in addition to more practical sections on how to perform emergency cardiology procedures and ECG recognition. The book is designed for busy medical and cardiology teams, with bullet-point information for speed and clarity combined with the integral cross-referencing system, enabling quick access to the necessary information.

As a renal/gen med SpR "emergencies in cardiology" are a frequent occurrence. Some parts are easy - management of STEMI/NSTEMI, but if you've spent a period of time in research then certain aspects get a bit hazy...what precisely to do with the AF patient...apart from give them all dig.

Well, this book holds your hand and answers most of these questions. I think for F1, early SHOs it will also be highly educational with succinct chapters on diagnosis at the start dealing with the patient with syncope, SOB, chest pain etc.

Nevertheless some sections need work. The WPW section doesn't have all the info in one place. Critical information is in a little box elsewhere in the book.

And obviously its out of date already compared to the latest ESC guidelines regarding AF and the latest iteration of the CHAD score, though you might not class that as an emergency.

Then there is the other issue that if money is tight its far better value to buy the oxford handbook of acute medicine which has an excellent cardiology section. In many ways this "emergencies in..." book is obsolete.

However, whereas the emergencies in book has vastly improved from edition 1 to 2, the can't be said for the oxford handbook of acute medicine in its disappointing transition from 2 to edition 3, with barely any updates and numerous inaccuracies.

Cardiac emergencies remain the mainstay of acute non-selective medical admissions. This handy-sized pocket guide provides key, succinct information and advice to manage a wide range of cardiology emergencies and `urgencies' and will be a useful prop for junior doctors at all levels. The first chapter on cardiovascular collapse and management of cardiogenic shock sets the tone of the book with clear bullet points, easy to read management plans and highlights key information in boxes. It is then divided into three sections, starting with common cardiovascular symptoms offering a range of differential diagnosis. Thereafter follows short sections on both common cardiac emergencies such as acute coronary syndromes, acute heart failure, arrhythmias and also robust advice on managing the more esoteric cardiology on-call quandaries from the labour ward and from anaesthetists. The final section is devoted to practical procedures and electrocardiogram (ECG) recognition. With the motto "there is always time to think" this section is particularly useful in reminding the junior doctor how to undertake practical techniques such as temporary pacing, but aptly states that it is not a substitute for seeking support and help when needed. The book is peppered throughout with good quality illustrations including relevant transthoracic and transoesphageal echocardiograms, magnetic resonance imaging scans and ECG rhythm strips in addition to cartoon illustrations to help understand cardiac anatomy. All in all a well balanced, clear, practical guide, offering structured management plans and useful tips for assessing and treating acute cardiological conditions.
