I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the other review - so had to write one immediately. I have owned this book for years and think it's delightful. I like to pick it up, and browse - always something will catch my eye and I end up spending time exploring the idea. I suppose it's more eye candy and idea inspiring than "how-to" - so if you want a step by step, do this, then do that and then use this, then use that, you probably will wonder why you got it. But then, why would you buy 1000 Artisan Textiles? Because it broadens your ideas and moves your parameters away out from your ordinary, work-a-day rut. I am nowhere near the artist the author is, so can't replicate what she's done here - but I have been learning to sketch - partly because of the inspiration in this book - and am creating some work I wouldn't have tried without reading it. I think this book has a purpose, and hope you'll give it a try. At the very least, check it out of your library to see what you think - I'll bet at least some of you will be back buying it.
Incidentally, I have never seen this book referenced in all the multitude of paint to stitch books out there, and have been surprised. Perhaps because it's Australian, and little known in the U.S. I bought it at a small bookstore in the late 90s here in the U.S. and think it simply didn't get the distribution it deserves. We were just beginning to discover Australian stitch artists at the time and many of us weren't aware of the incredible work being done in that country. This is a very respectable entry in the Australian creative needlework group of books. I own many of them, and have found something to admire and inspire in most all of them.
