My favourite needlecraft mystery so far!,
By
This review is from: Embroidered Truths [With Counted Cross-Stitch Pattern] (Berkley Prime Crime Mysteries) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is the ninth book in a cosy mystery series that is well and truly back on form after a somewhat ` patchy' couple of earlier books. Actually, I'm happy to report that this has been my favourite book of the series so far, namely owing to the starring role of my favourite character- Godwin. This book sees needlework store owner (and amateur sleuth Betsy Devonshire) taking on her toughest case yet after her co-worker, store manager Godwin, is arrested for the murder of his lover, John. Betsy and her store patrons, including the fabulous Monday Bunch, are certain that Goddy is innocent, but with bail exceeding one million dollars and all evidence pointing to Godwin's guilt, this is a case she may have a tough time unravelling... A great, fun read which is actually a bit more serious and `grown up' than some of the previous books with topics such as homophobia cropping up and small town narrow mindedness. This only added to the plot as far as I was concerned and made things a bit more realistic. This was a cosy that wasn't *quite* so cosy if you get my drift. I was also very happy to see Goddy take the starring role here, despite the circumstances. He's one of the most well-developed cosy characters I've ever read and I just love his flair for drama. Betsy too is not your average sleuth- for one thing she's a needlework store owner who happens to be a woman in her fifties who has a knack for solving crimes. Aided by her store patrons who are all convinced she's another Miss Marple, I love her determination in trying to do the right thing and her friendship with Godwin really shone through here. At the heart of these cosy crimes lie true friendships, which is charming. The small town setting in Minnesota also makes a nice change from crime-ridden big cities, so if you want a different kind of crime read then these might be what you're looking for. I would also say that you don't have to be an avid needle worker to get into these books- though they might give you a new interest in learning more crafts! If you like well-written cosy crimes that aren't exactly a taxing read then this is a series I would definitely recommend to you- only start with the beginning book, otherwise you might find yourself a bit confused!

A nice addition to a charming series, but not the best,

Betsy is a 50 something woman who inherited a needlecraft shop from her sister, whose murder Betsy investigated in the first book of the series. Newly divorced, Betsy inherited a new life in a small town Minnesota along with the shop, and a collection of colorful characters who soon became friends. In this book, recurring character Godwin (Betsy's flamboyantly gay and invaluable assistant) is accused of murdering his long-term but recently estranged lover, and it's up to Betsy to find the real killer.Reading this series is always a pleasure, and this book is no exception. However, I find one of the joys of reading books in a series to be the cast of ongoing characters, and with the exception of Godwin, they seemed very light in this book. Yes, they were there (unlike the last book in the series, which was set out of town) but they seemed nearly incidental. Having said that, Betsy is a fun if uncomplicated protagonist, and Godwin an over-the-top and amusing friend in distress, and the book will charm fans of the genre. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful:

Once again Monica Ferris has given me my money's worth with a good puzzle, fun characters and a delightful cozy mystery. I've read and enjoyed all her books, and hope for many more.

Monica Ferris continues to please with Betsy's antics! I love all the characters and always relish a return trip to Excelsior, MN!In this one, Betsy's faithful assistant, Godwin is accused of murdering his boyfriend (John) and she sets out to prove him innocent. This story helps to develop Godwin's character as lot as well as provide an interesting plot. |
