Book Description

3 Jun 2013

We don't need leaders who know about leadership - we need leaders who embody the capacity to lead in the midst of ambiguity and complexity. The concept of embodied leadership is derived from somatic coaching, a unique approach that brings the body forward as an advocate in creating a place for change and transformation. It brings together language, action, feeling and meaning and is based on the idea that the mind and body are inextricably linked: to develop one, you must cultivate the other.

Embodied Leadership deconstructs our thinking about the body using key discoveries in neuroscience to demonstrate the uses and benefits of a somatic approach, particularity in the area of emotional intelligence. There are practical exercises throughout to develop embodied leadership skills and personal development.

5.0 out of 5 stars A warm hearted and refreshing book 12 Jun 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have read many books about leadership over the years; often as I get to Chapter Two a weariness sets in as I get the sense that somehow I have read it all before.Pete Hamill's book Embodied Leadership is emphatically not one of those.
In fact no sooner had I finished reading it( "with attention" as encouraged by the author)than I wanted to go straight back to the beginning and start again.
This is a wonderfully warm hearted and refreshing book which offers insights into some of the big questions we face not just as leaders, but as members of the human race.Pete Hamill's rigorous thinking helps to make complex concepts clear .His writing conveys both a sense of the richness and relevance of past thinking and passion for the possibility of what lies ahead. He covers a wide range of topics which challenge leaders;the self, conflict ,purpose innovation, creativity, but the book is never superficial or unhelpfully theoretical. It is a book designed to encourage the reader to think and do things differently.Pete Hamill has a light touch informed by a profound knowledge of his subject.

This is a book to which I know I will return over and over again and the list of references for further study will serve me as a reading list for months to come!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended 1 Jun 2013

This excellent book offers a perspective on leadership in the 21st Century that is radical and compelling. Rigorously researched, it is still very accessible, and Pete Hamill has a knack for explaining complex and subtle ideas with clarity and humanity. The key points are also generously illustrated with stories and examples, as well as practical suggestions for people wanting to develop their own leadership potential using the ideas in the book. Highly recommended for anyone who aspires to leadership, whether or not they occupy positions of formal authority. Coaches, consultants and students of leadership will also get a great deal from `Embodied Leadership'.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and found myself talking about the content with various friends and groups that I work with, which I take to be a good sign! Furthermore, a spiritual community that I am part of has been deeply engaged in a question about what causes and enables people to grow and I found that Pete's book valuably contributed to that conversation.

I also found it got me thinking deeply about the efficacy of the work I do as a leadership development consultant and business coach. It gave me a credible and multi-dimensional framework to think about whether I am serving my clients as best I could.

I found this a very easy book to navigate, helped by the three part structure:
1. Setting the foundations.
2. Exploring the ideas in practice.
3. The wider implications for leadership.

Pete develops and works with some precise leadership distinctions such as between leaders, the position of leadership, the actions and behaviours of leaders and the results of leadership. This enables the reader to engage in the topic at a deep and helpful level.

Part one lays a solid and credible foundation to the claims made. It is rigorous, robust and well-illustrated and therefore compelling. The book cuts through the flakiness of so called scientifically grounded approaches to understanding the brain using neuroscience and exposes some of the dangers in this. Every claim that is made in the book is referenced and original sources shared. Whilst this book gives you enough reassurance to trust the validity and reliability of its claims, it is also like an entry point for the reader to access serious fields of study, such as mastery or decision making through somatic markers - allowing the reader to settle at the level that is important for them.

Pete Hamill is my leadership coach and Pete has been helping me to apply the concepts of this book for the last 18 months. What I can tell you is that this book is an accurate and complete reflection of the techniques which are starting to transform my leadership (which I am told is particularly noticeable in my leadership roles at work).

The (general) rule I apply to leadership books is that the value of the material is inversely proportional to the ease of reading. Not so here. Each concept is addressed in bite size chunks yet build upon each other in a way that makes the impact of the book greater than the sum of its parts. By the end of the book you will have covered a lot of ground but it doesn't seem hard work getting there. Perhaps it's the way that the science/theory (which helps get you up for the challenge for change) is dealt with logically and in lay terms? Perhaps it's a product of Pete's extensive experience of teaching this stuff to people from all walks of life over many years?

The other real triumph is the way that Pete implicitly acknowledges the challenges of any process of personal change (anyone who regularly sets and fails to keep New Year resolutions will know all about this) and provides specific, realistic and practical exercises to help you achieve short term positive impacts on your leadership. Each increment of progress helps to create a virtuous circle of development and investment in other concepts from the book.

In this book Pete Hamill has made it easy for everyone to understand how they can improve their effectiveness in the leadership roles they take in life. The research and theory will get you energised about the possibility of personal improvement. The simple exercises will increase the probability that it can happen for you.
