Amazon.co.uk Review

Ember's Creator, Cathy Brett, Talks About Her New Character--Scarlett Dedd

Who is Scarlett Dedd?
Scarlett is a pale, morbidly-obsessive teenager who would rather fake an authentic-looking, life-threatening stomach bug than go on a school trip. Trouble is the stomach bug ends up being anything but fake and completely life-threatening...life-taking, in fact.

Your books are full of cool illustrations--what made you decide to put pictures into your books?
When I made the transition from reading picture books to 'proper' books as a kid, I couldn't believe that the pictures suddenly disappeared. Poor, adults, I thought, to have no lovely illustrations to look at. I've been flummoxed by that youthful disappointment ever since. Being an illustrator long before I was a writer, it was pretty obvious I would have to illustrate my fiction and today's teens are so visually sophisticated I thought they deserved it!

Your main characters in Scarlett Dedd make very gruesome amateur horror films. Where did you get your inspiration from? Are you a horror film fan?
Some recent horror films scare the pants off me, but I love the classics (like Scarlett and her mates). I'm fascinated by the way that terror and laughter are very close emotional neighbours. I find horror films make great 'date' movies. Ever laughed all the way through something gory? Well, I don't tend to laugh much at romcoms and my dates never do, but they like it when I need comforting during a 90 minute bloodbath! My inspiration in Scarlett Dedd was a real group of teenagers who make the funniest and most disgusting horror videos. Priceless! So cool, that they just had to end up in a book!

Is it true you have a secret recipe for fake blood?
I have several--some tomato product-based, some using syrup. A blood-type for all occasions!

At times Scarlett Dedd is very spooky, did you have to write it hiding behind the sofa? What scares you?
Would you believe I'm totally scared of the dark? I think it's the 'unknown' thing--shapes lurking in corners, monsters under the bed, axe-wielding psychos about to leap out at you! The usual.

Will Scarlett Dedd and Ember Fury ever meet?
Ooo, wouldn't that be cool? Some minor characters do seem to be popping up in other books--I wonder if my readers will spot them--so I'd love to bring them all together. They definitely exist in the same universe (my head!) so, yes, I think it might happen.

Product Description

A sassy and entertaining illustrated debut from Cathy Brett

Pyromania: A mental derangement, excitement or excessive enthusiasm for fire.
Having celebrity parents isn’t as hot as it sounds. Yes, there’s money to burn, fame and some totally smoking guys...But when your dad’s more interested in blazing a trail to the top of the charts than why you got kicked out of school, again, it can make you seriously angry. And if there’s one thing Ember knows, it’s that the smallest spark of anger can ignite a whole heap of trouble...

Q: What do you get when you combine quirky artwork, a fast-paced plot, and a snarky teenage pyromaniac?
A: Ember Fury.

This book is a brilliant accomplishment -- part novel, part comic -- and I can't even begin to imagine the time and effort that went into creating it. The editing process alone must have been difficult to get through, and Headline should really congratulate themselves for producing such a unique novel. Author Cathy Brett's illustrations are stylish and original, and provide a great visual aid to accompany the text.

Ember herself is my favourite kind of character: sarcastic, flippant and somewhat socially awkward. Her thoughts and one-liners thoroughly entertained me, with her acerbic deliverance being my high point of the dialogue. The way she handles her family's fame and fortune is true to life, and probably the main reason for her less than respectful behaviour. Best friend Ned is a cool addition to the off-the-wall characters, and has a very interesting problem of his own. All I'll say is that it allows for some scenes to take place in WWII, which is a highly unexpected plot twist.

I really enjoyed Ember Fury, and have already read bits of it again, mainly so I can just stare at all the fantastic pictures. Even if you aren't a big fan of graphic novel type books, you should definitely give this one a try. It has much more depth than you might think and, at its core, is about a girl with a penchant for fire trying to find her place in the world.
