I love sleazy and cheap italian exploitation movies, their classic horrors, giallo's and crime films are legendary and thoroughly entertaining and well made. The same can not be said though for this soft porn horror hybrid. Now Joe d'amato is probably the most hack director italy ever produced ( kind of the italian Ed Wood!) and his career spanned 3 or 4 decades making soft and hardcore porn movies, horrors and even sword and scorcery films! In "Emanuelle In America" Laura Gemsler plays the erotic journalist and photographer exploring her sexual desires while hunting for a good story, what makes this one different though from it's predecessors is that this isn't purely a soft porn movie, it tries to amalgamate different genre's into it's being, namely here and more so in the sequel to this (Emanuel and the last cannibals) the horror genre. The snuff film subplot is the only thing about this film that is creative and interesting and unfortunately all too brief in it's plot. D'mato got into trouble with the italian authorities at the time (much the same Cannibal Holocaust director Ruggero deodato did a few yrs after) as people were convinced the snuff scenes were real, they were of course not real at all and after a few lawsuits the kuf-ufle went away.
It's hard to fathom just who this film will appeal to? Porn fans get some hardcore sex ( yes you heard that right) in this uncut presentation but not enough to satisfy and horror fans likewise will feel short changed by the shortlived snuff film subplot that is ridiculously left hanging. Overall though if you like cheap exploitation movies you might want to give this one a go, just don't expect a lot.
Blue underground as per usual deliver a really good package here ( much more than a film like this deserves to be honest!) with a really good quality 1.85 widescreen uncut print and an interview (13 mins) with the late Joe D'amto and an audio interview with actress Laura Gemsler.
