Review

'Lively without being irreverent.' - The Bookseller
'A thoughtful and heartfelt survey.' - TES
'Just what the modern child should have' - Marianne Adey, Co-Ordinator Children's Book Award

'Let's imagine that Jesus was born today', these are the opening words of this delightful book. With few words, on pages with pictures that perfectly portray the story, the author and illustrator echo the original Christmas story until the last page when they remind us that everything Jesus taught and gave us two thousand years ago remains the same today. REVIEW FOR COMPANION TITLE: E-MAIL JESUS@ANYTIME
A very different book – but one which has also been inspired by the internet - is ‘e-mail: Jesus @anytime’. This is a children’s book which imagines how the modern media would report Jesus’ life and trial. It’s cleverly written in the present tense – so you feel the immediacy of the story – and there are some very nice touches. I particularly like this illustration which goes with the words: ‘Four authors write true stories about his life. They become bestsellers’ – and there you’ve got a picture of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John at their book signing!
That’s ‘e-mail: Jesus @anytime’ – by Hilary Robinson and Anthony Lewis
published by Hodder Childrens Books. It’s £4.99 in paperback – and £9.99 for the hardback. - Judy Merry, Good Morning Sunday, Radio 2

Ever tried explaning Frankincense to a four year old ? .... Are you even really sure what it is yourself. Sometimes the greatest story ever told just doesn't work that well for children of the of the 21st Century. For youngsters brought up with "Gameboy", "Furby" and "Telly Tubbies" appreciation of lowing cattle, westward leading stars, kings on camels and babies in mangers comes hard.

Hilary Robinson dares to ask the question, "What if Jesus was born today?". That leads to an inspired vision for the Christmas Story. Its really a tale about communication. Angellic appearance and Stars of Bethlehem make way for Satellite television and the Internet. The media may be different, but the message remains true.

If you want your children to really understand the images of Christmas, looking beyond Santa and Snowmen, spend some of your E-cash on this book.

If, as a parent, you can't crack a small smile at the 3 Kings trying to get Myrhh Aromatherapy Baby Oil passed the Israeli customs, I'll eat my modem.

An excellent book for Christmas. It gives a different slant to the usual Christmas story and brings it right up to date. My children loved it and it gave them plenty to talk about.
