Product Description

Biopic starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers as the King of Rock 'n' Roll, following him from his humble beginnings to his first steps into music superstardom. Growing up in a dirt-poor part of the American South, Elvis is determined to make his mark as a singer. When his raw talent is discovered by 'Colonel' Tom Parker (Randy Quaid), the young Elvis forges a new sound that conquers the world, rapidly turning him into the biggest star of the 20th century. But with his enormous fame and fortune, Elvis eventually falls prey to the lure of drink and drugs, before his humiliating death in 1977.

Synopsis

A fact-based television mini-series about the life of Elvis Presley, the legendary king of rock 'n' roll. Elvis –The Early Years chronicles Presley's humble beginnings through to his meteoric rise to fame. Made with the full cooperation and participation of the Elvis Presley Estate, it is the first time in a biographical film that Elvis Presley's master recordings have been heard. Irishman Jonathan Rhys Meyers puts in an exceptionally convincing performance as The King. Having already played a rock star in Velvet Goldmine, Meyers is aptly suited to playing Elvis. His stunning performance earned him a Golden Globe award for Best Actor in a Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television in 2005. Meyers is ably supported by Randy Quaid (Independence Day) as 'Colonel' Tom Parker and Rose McGowan (Scream) as Ann-Margret. Elvis –The Early Years sees a number of exceptional performances by actors who bring vitality to the enduring and often told story of the life of Elvis Presley.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good watch 7 Sep 2009
Format:DVD
Very good film, takes a while for Rhys Meyers to get into his stride but once he does he is very convincing. Shows how manipulated Elvis was which isn't talked about much. Definitley worth the few euro.

4.0 out of 5 stars A critique from a critical Elvis Fan!!! 4 May 2010
Format:DVD
As I am a life long Elvis fan I purchased this DVD with some trepidation. Like most true fans I have a hard time watching someone try to portray Elvis, as no one can come close - it's an impossible ask of any actor/singer. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised with Elvis - The Early Years. Yes there were mistakes in there but there were also many small details that only Elvis fans would recognise - and sometimes it's those small details that make all the difference; and I appreciate that they have to get details into the film and so consequently things sometimes get pushed at the wrong time and in the wrong places.

Overall the cast did a great job. Rhys-Meyers managed to capture some of Elvis (especially little physical nuances) and made a decent stab at miming and moving andI thought the guy who played the Colonel was a standout performance.

All in all, a very watchable DVD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable 19 Jun 2009
Format:DVD
I really enjoyed this dramatisation of Elvis' life. I thought the mood and the setting was great. However, some of the casting and acting was perhaps a little dubious.

Ultimately, I think I would rather just catch one of the numerous live concerts and just see the man in action for real. But I will say that this is great for anyone looking to find a little Elvis related drama.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than you might expect 25 Aug 2006
By M. Hill
Format:DVD
This is worth seeing for anyone interested in Elvis. It shows Elvis' story in a candid light that we have never seen before. It is surprisingly honest about Elvis' flaws and weaknesses. His inappropriate pursuit of the 14 year old Priscilla is not glossed over nor is his drug abuse. It even shows the scene where Elvis gives drugs to the young Priscilla and knocks her out for 2 days and refuses to allow a doctor to be called. This is no haliography.

What this shows very well is the control Colonel Parker had over Elvis and the insecurities Elvis felt that his fame would be taken away from him if he didn't do what Col. Parker said. The scene where the Col. makes Elvis burn his books about spirituality was very telling.

The sets and costumes are amazing. I agree that Myers is not great but then who could play Elvis? If you compare it to how well Joquim Phoenix played Johnny Cash then it doesn't come off well.

However this is the Elvis story as you have never seen it before. If you can't be bothered to read Peter Guralnick's two biographies of Elvis then this is the next best thing! As close to the truth as we'll ever see. And for that reason it's well worth seeing.

Interesting they have elvis voice singing but this dude acting. As him why they couldn't show elvis singing instead of this dude miming is beyond me! But interesting watch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rhys Meyers makes for a credible Elvis
This film shows Elvis' early years. The acting is really good (considering that Rhys Meyers is Irish!) and Elvis did have his Southern ways...

2.0 out of 5 stars elvis-the early years
I felt this was a porely scripted portrail of his life, elvis was given a slightly mean personality
on occassions. I thought the acting was constrained because of this.
