Biography

Cornershop are as The Times and most major papers have put it, 'the most treasured of British institutions,' yet they are amazingly one of the most neglected institutions England has ever known too. Not for them to be merely a pigeon hole in the staff room, they always cut it their own way, constantly changing with every release, burning Morrissey pictures outside EMI to deliver a message that all… Read more in Amazon's Cornershop Store

First, let's clear up that the above tracklisting is wrong. For some reason, track one on this CD is always listed as being called 'Ghandi' when in fact it is called 'Waterlogged'. I clear this up now because 'Waterlogged', Cornershop's debut single, is a charming and extremely entertaining song. However, if you're expecting the Cornershop of the last two album 'When I Was Born for the 7th Time' and the wonderful 'Handcream for a Generation', you'll be surprised. This is Cornershop's earliest incarnation, a lo-fi indie band who were frequently refered to as "Jesus and Mary Chain with sitars". This charmingly amateurish collection of their first two EPs is a wonderful historical artifact and, sadly, is usually either overlooked or critically savaged. Cornershop's early sound is easily the equal of, if not better than, their current direction. These feedback swamped, quirkily charming, warmly comic songs make up two extremely good, if occasionally flawed, EPs. 'England's Dreaming' is powerful, confrontational punk, 'Kawasaki (more heat than chapati)' is deceptively catchy and 'Summer Fun in a Beat Up Datsun' is dirtily summery. They make for uplifting yet intriguing listening for the more adventurous music fan. Give it a few listens and once you find the few lyrics of 'Waterlogged' sailing round your brain, you'll have unlocked the secret of this unique and rare compilation.
