Product Description

4 CD set containing every Elvis Presley studio release from the start of his career in 1954 through to end of 1959, including variant versions that saw 50's vinyl release. (Does not include recordings withheld from 50's release, nor alternate film versions that did not feature on the soundtrack LP's / EP's). All tracks are the original mono recordings. The aim here is to provide an alternative to the predominant approach taken by record companies for dealing with the problems inherent in 1950's recordings - i.e. tape hiss, distortion etc. That approach achieves a clean sound by use of blanket electronic processing; but the trade-off is loss of parts of the sound itself - mainly the more indefinable parts that drive atmosphere and a sense of being there. With this set, as with previous As He Was Meant To Be Heard releases, processing has been applied only where tape hiss or distortion would be intrusive without it, and only to the minimum degree necessary. The set comes in a 4 CD jewel box and includes booklet with comprehensive recording details. Tracks run mainly in chronological order of first release. Note: If you already own Elvis Presley As He Was Meant To Be Heard Volumes 1 to 3, there is no need to buy this set to obtain the 50's tracks omitted from those volumes. The Collector Edition of As He Was Meant To be Heard Volume 4, released January 10th 2011, includes an extra disc containing the missing tracks.

I first heard Elvis when I was 9 years old in 1956 and have followed his music all my life.My favorite music is of the years from Sun through 1960,then 1969 through 1970 and a few pieces after till his death.I've heard his music in countless releases, rereleases, and remastered rereleases.NOTHING comes close to reperesenting its depth and power as this collection.I heard nuances in his vocals I'd never heard before, same for the musicians in regards to what they were playing.I had chills up my back and tears in my eyes from the passion unheard till now. When Elvis,Scotty,Bill and DJ toured, the must have come across like the Led Zepplin of their time,so forceful and explosive was their sound, heard here in all its sonic beauty for the first time.I came to understand in a way I hadn't before just why Elvis did what he did to the music world and this country. The tracks from his second album are especially dynamic("Rip It Up," "Ready Teddy" and "Long Tall Sally" are standouts). The packaging, though lacking in a professionally made feel, indicates a committment to doing things well and right.I immediaitely went to Inverse's website and ordered their other products after hearing these discs. They've two double disc collections that are of 50s music that should also knock your socks off,"So Sad" by the Everly Bros.and "Rave On" by Buddy Holly standouts there.Enjoy!!!!!!

I couldn't agree more with Paul Larsen. These four cd's do have a fantastic sound, with nuances you've never heared before. Pick one of the Al Wertheimer books, put your headphones on, turn up the volume and you don't give a s*** about the packaging anymore.

Having recently been upgrading my Elvis collection with the RCA Legacy releases , I was very dubious about purchasing this product. The post-army Legacy albums are peerless in terms of sound quality however, this collection has made my Fifties Legacy / DSD etc CD's virtually redundant. Admittedly on some tracks there is little to differentiate between this release and the Legacy CD's, but when I listened to the 'Milk Cow Blues Boogie' , 'Mystery Train', 'Heartbreak Hotel', 'Love Me' and many others I was so surprised at how vibrant Elvis sounds here. With this set you really are there in the studio with Elvis, Scotty and Bill (and DJ). This area is very subjective, but if I had to choose an Elvis (fifties) collection to take with me to Roy Plumley's Desert Island, it would be this one.

I was very pleased with the audio on these CD's. Every 50's track is a bargain. However, the packaging was a letdown. A standard jewel case, I have expected something a bit more for [] pounds upwards like the nashville and las vegas rca sets. There is no info except the track listings and standard pictures. The print quality was not no great as well giving the set a cheap look. This deters me from buying the additional sets from the Inverse Label.

Personally I hope RCA release something along the same lines as Bob Dylan and the Beatles have released their key material in the original mono mixes.
