Product Description

Disc 1 spans 1960 and includes singles and optimum album tracks from that year. With minimal sound processing, these are the original stereo mixes with the exception of 3 tracks from the GI Blues Soundtrack which have been re-mixed to reduce echo to the level of the original mono, plus one mono track. This disc has an identical tracklist to the single CD that constitutes the ordinary edition of As He Was Meant To be Heard Volume 4. Disc 2 contains the 50's releases omitted from As He Was Meant To Be Heard Volumes 1 to 3, again with minimal sound processing. Does not include recordings withheld from 50's release, nor variant film versions not featured on the original soundtrack LP's / EP's.

These cds have the best-sounding versions of "Elvis Is Back" and G.I.Blues" currently available. No RCA/Sony BMG/FTD releases come close for depth, power, richness and fullness in sound.Add to the sound the committment with which Elvis and his musicians sang and played on these 1960 albums and you have a listening experience like no other. The instrumental portion of "Reconsider Baby" is a sonic powerhouse of passion and force that explodes in your face when it arrives.Elvis' vocals are here in the full sincerity he brought to them, nuances audible as,literally, never before. As with the 4 cd set of 50s material prior to this release, the second disc here of songs from the 50s has to be heard to be believed,Bill Black's bass skills heard as,again, never before.Talk about an underrated musician! Talk about groundbreaking cds! Go for it!

I couldn't wait to get this, to see if the Inverse Label had achieved the same back-to-basics sound improvements they did on previous volumes.

Answer is most of the tracks sound better than I've heard them on CD before, and they all have that sense of realness which so many Elvis CD releases have lost. But the improvement is more striking with some tracks than others.

The tracks from Elvis is Back are certainly streets ahead of my first RCA CD of the album (which came with mediocre sound and a helping of digital clicks on `Make Me Know It'). But comparison with the FTD mastering of Elvis Is Back is a more close run thing. Still, the Inverse tracks to my ears have the edge. Not just in terms of realness, most sound crisper without necessarily being any more treble. `Such a Night' and `Girl of My Best Friend' are, if anything, more laid back than the FTD versions, and the more atmospheric for it. `Reconsider Baby' is, without doubt, the most exciting mastering I've heard.

As to the singles featured, they all seem to sound more like the originals than the CD's I'm acquainted with, but `It's Now or Never' stands out for its lack of glassiness compared to elsewhere.

The GI Blues tracks though are the real revelation. The back-cover spiel mentions the original recording process for the soundtrack not being up to the usual production standards for Elvis albums, and the soundtrack CD's I've got bear that out. But you'd hardly know it on this CD. `Tonight's So Right for Love' and `Wooden Heart' sound better than they ever have, and it's a real coup the way the previously over-the-top echo has been reduced on `GI Blues', `Frankfurt Special' and `Shopping Around'.

Great to hear Elvis as I remember him from the originals in 1960. This is the 4th in the series and I love them all. When I heard the 1st disc for the first time it bowled me over and all those memories came flooding back. It's as near as you'll ever get to listening to the originals for the first time, some in my case, on 78! If you really want to hear Elvis I strongly recommend you buy these discs, they're the most authentic you will get.

Whilst Inverse worked some magic on their first 3 Elvis releases, managing to recreate a sound very close to the original vinyl albums probably by the very clever use of a hi tech equaliser. This edition does not contain that same magical extra breath of life.

Maybe this is because recording techniques had moved on a long way by the time these recordings were made. The album "Elvis is Back" was probably one of his best albums and I think the FTD remastered version of that album is far superior to this one. As for the GI Blues tracks, they were the first examples of the junk pop that Elvis would record for all those terrible movies. Incidentally as another reviewer has remarked, why were the "Elvis is Back" tracks not placed together on this cd? Also some of the tracks on this cd have very little space between them, and that's just plain sloppy.
The second cd contains some more of the earlier (pre army)tracks that were not included on the earlier albums(why not?) and this time the work done is much more successful. Well up to the standard of the previous volumes.

So overall I can't recommend this double album if you're expecting to discover an improvement on versions of "Elvis is Back" that are already out there. No stars to Inverse, 3 stars because it's Elvis!
