The 1998-99 season has begun. Gerry and Macko - twentysomethings with an appetite for beer, women and football and an aversion to housework - are accosted by an elderly soak who swears that he has recently met Elvis Presley outside Elland Road. I had reservations with the opening chapter, but as the book progresses I found myself drawn in and getting increasingly involved with the characters who mature with the story. It's an unusual take on science-fiction, romance, intrigue and football (something for everyone!)that somehow weaves together to create a gripping read. The characters are varied and well-drawn; from the crass and crude Macko, to the sensitive and soulful Ellis. The plot twists and turns, keeping the reader guessing and curious to find out more. I think the key to it's enjoyment for me was I found myself genuinely caring what happened to this crazy bunch in their surreal but surprisingly believable lives!

However if, like me, you want a book to while away a relaxing hour or two - something with an interesting storyline that will cajole you into reading the next chapter and then the next - then this could be a good buy.
The main characters are brought to life really well, making you feel you've come across them somewhere before. The narrative is written in a slightly conversational style, making the quips and observations of the author fit well in the story.
The story itself does its level best to blend the worlds of Torchwood, football and lads mags together with humour, and does it in such a way that it's worth reading.
However if, like me, you want a book to while away a relaxing hour or two - something with an interesting storyline that will cajole you into reading the next chapter and then the next - then this could be a good buy.
