Book Description

It's tough being the King.

Which is why in 1977 Elvis faked his own death and endured massive facial reconstruction surgery, and disappeared from the limelight to live a normal life as the unassuming Aaron King. Unfortunately, leaving fame behind also meant leaving his fortune behind, too, and now Elvis finds himself broke and living in near poverty in a small apartment in Los Angeles. Luckily for him, it turns out he's a pretty good private investigator.

Now in his seventies and contemplating a return to music (discreetly, of course), Elvis is hired to solve a baffling missing person case. The King digs deeper, and soon finds himself surrounded by the seedier elements of Los Angeles, from nefarious Hollywood producers who prey upon the young, to twin brothers with a very dark secret.

And as Elvis pieces the bizarre puzzle together, he slowly makes his singing comeback—and will be reunited on stage with someone even the King himself never dreamed possible.

**Acclaim for the Novels of J.R. Rain**

"Gripping, adventurous, and romantic—J.R. Rain's The Lost Ark is a breakneck thriller that traces the thread of history from Biblical stories to current-day headlines. Be prepared to lose sleep!"
—JAMES ROLLINS, international bestselling author of Altar of Eden and The Doomsday Key

"I enjoyed this immensely. The protagonist, Samantha Moon, is a female vampire with a husband and children. Those predate her condition; six years ago she was attacked by a vampire and rendered into one. Now she's trying to carry on with family and private eye business, and she's a feisty, skilled person, so is doing mostly okay. It is not a horror story; she buys animal blood to eat and doesn't generally prey on humans. But her husband has an increasing problem with her coldness—not of spirit, but of body. 'You sicken me and scare the hell out of me,' he tells her. 'And when I touch you it's all I can do to not gag.' She replies, 'Words every wife wants to hear.' I love this! What makes it special are her character and nature."
—PIERS ANTHONY, New York Times bestselling author of A Spell for Chameleon and On A Pale Horse

"Dark Horse is one of the best books I've read in a long time! A great classic detective story with a modern twist. Unique and interesting characters (I think I'm half in love with Jim Knighthorse now!), a great plot that kept me guessing until the end, and some of the funniest lines I've read anywhere."
—GEMMA HALLIDAY, author of Deadly Cool and Play Dead

"Impossible to put down. J.R. Rain's Moon Dance is a fabulous urban fantasy."
—APRIL VINE, author of The Midnight Rose and Blindfolded by Lust

"Moon Dance is absolutely brilliant!"
—LISA TENZIN-DOLMA, author of Understanding the Planetary Myths and The Dolphin Experience

"Moon Dance is a must read. If you like Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum, bounty hunter, be prepared to love J. R. Rain's Samantha Moon, vampire private investigator."
—EVE PALUDAN, author of Letters from David and The Romance Writer's Pink Pages

"I totally loved The Body Departed. As someone who communicates with those who are either earthbound or have crossed over—your descriptions and interpretations of the dialogue and circumstances could not have been written more accurately. My favorite scene is the one of Jesus stepping down from the cross and then the passionate and compassionate way it was treated as he went back to the cross. I will relive that for a long time to come. You're a wonderfully descriptive writer who paints a very creative, visionary canvass based in a paranormal pallet that only a few experience and many can enjoy."
—JULIE BELMONT, author of The Path to Personal Success and Freedom and Seizing Your Success

"Powerful stuff!"
—AIDEN JAMES, author of Cades Cove and Deadly Night

4.0 out of 5 stars Good detective story 21 May 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
After reading J R Rain's Vampire Moon series, thought I'd give this a go. I like the humour in his books and wasn't disappointed; Elvis AKA Aaron King is a laugh. Within the cute concept is a well crafted crime thriller, so it's worth reading for this alone, don't be put off if you roll your eyes at the idea that Elvis is alive etc. I actually often forgot that the PI was supposed to be Elvis; the story took over. Sweet ending, but kind of draws a line as regards any follow-up books, which is a shame.

I bought this because Amazon kept showing it to me and it was really cheap.

As it turns out, I would have been happy if it cost plenty more - this was a great book - funny and engaging - I am no book reviewer and I like what I like, but I like this!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun and engaging 9 Feb. 2015

4.5 stars

I just love the concept of this book. What if…. Elvis is alive and working as a PI in Los Angeles. And whether you’re a (huge) Elvis fan like me or not, it’s a story that can be appreciated for what it is – a quirky and light-hearted tale that I don’t suppose would actually be beyond the realm of possibility if someone wanted it enough.

Weary of the pressures of his lifestyle, Elvis faked his own death in 1977 and for the last 30 some years has been living as the likeable and sarcastically witty Aaron King. Extensive reconstructive facial surgery has changed his appearance enough not to be easily recognisable although there’s still that fleeting glimmer of something that gives people a sense of familiarity.

The mystery and private investigation procedure aspect of the story is realistic and moves along fairly quickly with a sometimes unpredictable and well thought out plot. Aaron King is hired to find a missing young starlet. Luckily, he’s pretty good at his job, and as he pieces everything together the trail takes him into sleazy neighbourhoods and into the more sordid aspects of human nature.

The narrative is in the first person and reading Elvis’ thoughts and feelings about living a totally different lifestyle, makes identifying with him very easy. It’s entertaining, with emotionally touching moments and a very well presented storyline which flows well. Great character development too with a distinctly unglamorous but charmingly modest and self-deprecating Mr King, who’s hooked on painkillers, likes his booze a little too much and desperately misses his daughter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant - and clever! 31 Jan. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Decided to get this book as even the title was interesting. It was a great idea for a story - which turned out to be fun and serious. Loved the whole Elvis side of things, yet it was a great P.I story at the same time. Very clever and very well done.

I got this when it was 'free' but would have been very happy even if I'd paid for it.

Highly original and highly recommended :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars A welcome Surprise 11 Nov. 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have never read any of Rain's books before, despite most of them having really good reviews. Being a cheap Kindle book I thought I'd give it a go and was really pleasantly surprised. The book is witty, fast paced and immensley enjoyable. I liked the idea of Elvis having faked his own death and becoming a private investigator, it worked really well. I am not usually a reader of mystery books but this book has left me wanting more and I will certianly be seeking out more of Rain's works if this book is anything to go by.

5.0 out of 5 stars An interesting twist to a true story 7 July 2011
By Bev M
Format:Kindle Edition
I love the fact that J R Rain took a monumental piece of history and turned it into a great crime novel. Elvis supposedly died back in the 70's, well according to J R, Elvis Presley is now Aaron King, a slightly down at heel PI working in LA.

The concept of this is very clever, Elvis was sick of the lifestyle he had so faked his own death and became a PI. The interesting thing is as happy as he is in the new life, the feelings of guilt over leaving his daughter echo through the pages. J R Rain has taken the 20th century icon of Elvis and made him into the likeable, fallible Aaron King.

I would say another triumph for J R Rain!
