Elvis Sings the Great British Songbook

Biography

Elvis Aaron Presley is one of the biggest-selling artists of all-time, but mere numbers cannot begin to explain the colossal cultural impact he had in the mid-20th Century. He was a central figure in the transformation of the grey, conservative 50s into the technicolor 60s through the liberalizing effect of rock and pop music. Frank Sinatra had proved extremely popular in the 40s with young ... Read more in Amazon's Elvis Presley Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Elvis sings the blues - what more could you ask? 13 July 2003
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I love this album. Really and truly love it. I could play it over and over and over again. Why? Because it's Elvis! Singing the blues! What other reason do you need?

Elvis never cut a true blues album which is a cyring shame because the man could wrap his voice around a blues song like nothing else.

This album takes tracks from various places and puts them all together. Yes, there are some excellent songs missing from this compilation but there are some gems on this album. The ever wonderful 'Reconsider Baby' is a stand-out, with Elvis so into the song that you can hear him throatily encouraging the musicians to 'play those blues, boy' in the bridge. There's also a down and dirty version of 'Stranger in My Home Town' plus the excellent original version of 'One Night of Sin'. 'Like A Baby' gives me tingles everytime I hear it.

I could go on and on talking about the wonderful songs that feature here including 'It Feels So Right', 'So Glad You're Mine', 'I Feel So Bad' and, well, you get the picture. Get this album and wallow in it. The King at his bluesy best. I'll say again - what more could you ask?

5.0 out of 5 stars Blues, Blues, Blues 17 May 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Could this guy sing the blues, or what? Here is a stunning glimpse at some of the blues that Elvis recorded throughout his career; pity that he never cut a blues album, but the blues was an integral part of his music, and his craeting rock n roll.

For those who know their blues, Elvis was a recipient of the WC Handy award for "keeping the blues alive in his music."

This great collection is missing loads of superb tracks, but still is excellent with many highlights and standout tracks. What would be good, would be a double CD of blues, but for now, and at this price, this is a great great CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad at this price 15 Aug 2000
Format:Audio CD
20 tracks at this price has to be good by anyones standards. A pleasing trip through Elvis' bluesier output from '55 to '70. One or two tracks are a bit out of place here, particularly "Hot Dog"....and there are good tracks like "Only The Strong Survive" and "Wearing That Loved On Look" that would have suited this CD. Still, overall , not bad if you are just looking for an Elvis CD and are not a collector.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great 21 July 2012
By D Jones
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Really good compilation. very moody and punchy. I really likes Stranger In My Home Town. I think some of these tracks may differ from original album versions, be they other takes or remastered / remixed diffrently from what I'd known before. Great CD!
