Product Description

Kurt Russell is Elvis in a career-defining performance. Just two years after Elvis Presley died, Kurt Russell brought him back to life in the original biopic about the king of Rock 'n' Roll. Broadcast on ABC in 1979, Elvis marked the first time director John Carpenter and actor Kurt Russell would work together in what would become a legendary pairing in film history (Escape From New York, Big Trouble in Little China, The Thing and Escape From L.A.) Tracing Presley's life from his impoverished childhood to his meteoric rise to stardom to his triumphant return to Las Vegas. Elvis features Shelley Winters (Gladys Presley), Season Hubley (Priscilla Presley), Bing Russell (Kurt's real-life father as Vernon Presley), Pat Hingle (Colonel Tom Parker), Joe Mantegna ("Memphis Mafia" member Joe Esposito) and Ed Begley Jr. (drummer D.J. Fontana) in an all-star supporting cast for an effort that garnered numerous Emmy® nominations including Outstanding Lead Actor for Russell. Restored from the original film elements. Special Features - 'Bringing a Legend To Life' featurette with archival interviews of Kurt Russell and John Carpenter (1979). Commentary by 'The Voice of Elvis' Ronnie McDowell and author Edie Hand. Rare clips from American Bandstand. Photo gallery.

4.0 out of 5 stars good performance on Blue Ray 15 Aug 2010
By Chris H
I bought this off another site with frre art cards and it arrived on Saturday 2 days before it hits the shops. Its the full un cut film not the cinema version. Nice wide screen and clean print. Sadly its grainy in places but does not affect the film. Kurt Russel was superb as Elvis and the music scenes are wonderful. Sound quality is superb and is good value at 2hrs 40 mins.

4.0 out of 5 stars Elvis The Movie (Blu-Ray) 17 Aug 2010
Firstly I want to discus the movie.Carpenter-Russell-Elvis,Having been a great fan of John Carpenter & Kurt Russell & a massive Elvis fan,and still am,this biopic delivers In spades. This has to be the best one ever made about "The King" Kurt Russell's portrayal of ELVIS was so uncannily real, and no one has come close in my opinon, most people know the story by now, bearing In mind this was released two years after Elvis's death and Lot's of people where still In Mourning. The King was dead but Kurt brought him back to life, If only briefly.

The Blu-ray version! thanks Amazon for great service, waiting for me In my post box on the 16 August . Well it could have been better, I suppose for a thirty year old film, it's as good as it's gonna be, don't get me wrong, some scenes just jump out at you, then some scenes just fade, In hindsight it's 20 times better than any old VHS COPY you may have, and probably the best version you will ever see, oh and it's in wide-screen or letterbox if you prefer, well I do!. Having not seen a normal DVD version I have nothing to compere it to. To Buy Or Not To buy????? Lets just say It's not the best Blu-RAY release but it's definitely not the worse.

4.0 out of 5 stars Elvis The Movie 16 May 2011
I have seen this movie probably 3 or 4 times before in the theatres and on tape. Having it on blu-ray was the next best thing. Although I am not please with some aspects of the movie, I felt that this is a piece of history that every Elvis fan should cherish. The songs, if they had been performed by Elvis would have made the movie much more enjoyable.

First of all, this movie would not be so beautiful without the great performance of kurt Russell; and it's easy to understand why director John Carpenter would later decide to collaborate with him several time. Kurt Russell IS Elvis, in this movie, and the passion and respect he feels towards the legendry icon of rock'n'roll music, still nowadays, go far beyond the flat screens of our modern TVs, hitting us right into the chest. Elvis' love for his brother, for his mother and father (played by Kurt Russell's father Bing Russell), his fondness for sincerity, for a simple life away from the bright light of success; Carpenter tells us the story of the person, not of the icon, and Russell perfectly fits in this role. The beginning of the movie is terrific, with Elvis shutting off the buzz coming from the news shooting right into the screen of his television(it reminded me, even if it was very different in scope, the opening scene of fire walk with me), and then tha days of his youth, his feeling of loss and solitude (due to his twin brother death)which so well made him appear as a young Jonny Cash...everithing is done with a sense of respect and loss, and after watching this movie you can't help but wonder what would have happen if the King was still here, with us, sharing his pain and alleviating our own with his voice, his songs, his heart. Elvis is dead, no doubt about it, but thanks to this movie he is now a little closer, and that's, after all, all that now we can expect from him.

4.0 out of 5 stars 31 years later! 3 Dec 2010

Got this Blueray version as a nostalgia trip for myself as well as for my wife to see for the first time.
The entire movie was still very vivid in my mind. I still thought Kurt Russell done an outstanding job in the part, maybe even appreciated it more than I did first time round.
I always regretted never getting the chance to see Elvis live in my lifetime (I was 13 years old when he died in 77), but his music has kept me great company on my journey and I hope he has on yours too.
Not the greatest movie ever made, but a reasonable insight and history look into where it all started for Elvis and his family. Nothing much newsworthy for most E fans, but definetly worth a viewing for anyone with a passing interest in E's music and life.
The Blueray disc has some interesting interviews and extra pieces for Elvis diehards.
Minor niggle is the cutting of Burning Love from the final Vegas show at the end of the movie. It definetly added a + point to the original - anyone know why it got chopped for the latest release of this movie.
Thanks to John Carpenter, Kurt Russell, Season Hubley and co for a fine effort and tribute to the man that really was the King!
