Exactly what it says on the tin. Perhaps the most exciting period of Elvis' career. The book is full of interesting anecdotes which really work to draw you closer to the Elvis 1957 concert experience and the events surrounding those shows. While there is very little footage of Elvis in concert in 1957, and little-to-no audio recordings (apart from some very short radio broadcasts), Hanson is successful in his bid to enlighten even the most ardent Presley admirer, and lift the veil of mystery which obscures the truth of the man in the gold lamé suit.

I loved this book. And with 95% of it being from newspaper reports before, during and after the concerts it doesn't rely on memories, instead on what people said right then. Not for those who want to know who Elvis's girlfriend was at the time but a book for those who want to know the effect of Elvis in 1957 on people and popular culture. Fascinating stuff.

It seems that as Elvis Presley progressed musically, in the studio and on stage, the live decibel level was so cataclyzmic that it almost didn't matter: the hysteria only increased, and now there were movies to bolster memories of many television appearances.
Just like alot of Presley projects, this book is "fun" and serious at the same time. In a sense, these '57 shows were really farewell shows - yes, "Hollywood" was calling, and the rockin' rebel would be considerably contained creatively - but the insightful fan and historian would recognize that he would have an impact on "the Hollywood musical", albeit small compared to what he had transformed in the recording studios.
It is poignant that it has to be believed that the average concert attendee had no idea that this entertainment phenomenon was headed for more restful, peaceful clims - among the show biz exponents he originally enraged.
Some touching slice o' life stories are included.
There are several photographs new to this fan of 43 years or so. One is from a late '57 show, described as his last of the decade. I clearly recall seeing a photo published many years ago of a farewell show in Memphis...in *1958*!
Do any of these '50s shows exist on tape or acetate? It seems that by mid-1957, Elvis' organization knew better than to allow any "outside" recording of their product. Some earlier shows sound pretty cool. Then again, by the time "Jailhouse Rock" was in the works, the concerts were truly *visual* events.
[To wit, a youtube film apparently taken from the back of an auditorium, with Elvis and group 99% inaudible].

'Elvis 57' is the book we have been waiting for 45 years to be written.

My wife (age 11 in '57) and me (age 13 in '57), of course without knowing each other then, saw Elvis in Saint Louis, Missouri on March 29, 1957. This book confirms what we had always remembered, that Elvis wore his gold lame' suit during his St. Louis performance.

At that time, it was not just girls who yelled and screamed that night, like my future wife, but also me and a lot of thirteen years old boys. It was generation aginst generation. My sister and her boyfriend (now married) were just two years older than me; but, they could drive me to the Kiel Auditorium. They were totally embarrased by Elvis' entire performance, and just laughed and laughed at him, and at me. They thought that Pat Boone, whom we also saw in 1957, was the coming superstar. How wrong they were. Makes me feel great to this date to have proven them wrong!

Elvis' rock & roll concert was and is the best either of us ever saw. After we were married, we again saw Elvis in 1974 at Ohio State University. The concert we saw then, was a totally different Elvis. But, we still enjoyed the excitement.

Again, Alan, thanks for a great book for all Elvis fans, and for the memories of all of us who saw Elvis during his '57 tour!
