4.0 out of 5 stars Elvira Madigan - Korean DVD. 24 Jan 2010
Format:DVD
This is obviously not a studio or remastered production but evidently made directly from an oldish 35mm original print.
As such the colours are occasionally a bit faded. There are a few transparent vertical emulsion scratches on the print but nothing more distracting than you might see at a repertory cinema.
The sound track and English subtitling are very clear except for a
fifteen second cutout in dialogue between Sarre and an officer friend.
There are no credits but there is a filmography for the principals as an extra.
Any qualms about focussing, editing, etc. should be ruled out because they are indigenous to the original print.
All in all, good value for the money; entirely suitable for domestic viewing and being multiregional is a definite plus.

4.0 out of 5 stars Chasing Butterflies 16 July 2012
By ajay
Format:DVD
Bo Gunnar Widerberg was a Swedish director who gained fame in the mid 60's with this film. Those were the years when Swedish cinema was mostly known for the films of Ingmar Bergman. Bo may have felt that there was too much religion and theology in Bergman's films. The central theme of Bergman films was usually mankind's relationship with God. Bo Widerberg was probably more interested in relationship between human beings.

Elvira Madigan was based on a true story which has been passed down through several generations in Sweden. Elvira a young tightrope walker falls in love with Count Sparre a 'happily' married army man. The film is about the temporary paradise which the couple discovers in a forest. Having abandoned all the trappings and responsibilities of 'real' life they make love, chase butterflies, and in a wonderful scene, feast on a can full of fresh cream and berries collected from the forest. The beauty of their romance lies in it's ephemeral nature. Both of them (and the audience as well) are aware that the 'picnic' will be over soon, and that it will end badly. Elvira lives for the moment and is completely at home in the forest. But the count is a thinking man. Why must the choices made thoughtlessly when we are young become a prison when we are older?

The beauty of the film lies in the fact that Widerberg does not preach or seek to give any answers. Like the lovers he focuses on the moment. Until the moment is finally shattered. The film ends with a frozen frame of Elvira chasing a butterfly. And for the audience it is time to stop chasing butterflies and return to their 'prison'.

By Trevor Willsmer HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
The film that launched a thousand copycat hairspray ads, and certainly more parodied than actually seen these days, Elvira Madigan is as light as a butterfly floating on the breeze - a beautiful to look at but short-lived tale of two doomed runaway lovers who, being Swedish, naturally end up committing suicide. Pia Degermark is beautiful, Thommy Berggren is a more beautiful Oskar Werner lookalike, the scenery is beautiful, the Mozart and Vivaldi soundtrack is beautiful, the photography is beautiful, the spilled wine that's the closest we get to seeing any blood is beautiful and even the one brief bit of vomiting onscreen isn't entirely ugly. It's pleasant enough and it's easy to understand its popularity, but it's too beautiful to truly love.

4.0 out of 5 stars An old film
Of its genre quite good, but a bit on the slow side. Picture quality is good, however, and for Francophiles probably worth a watch.

First saw this at London's Curzon cinema in 1968 and was pleased to be able to get the DVD. Liked it now almost as much as when I was a young 20 something then! Read more

Bought as a gift for a young girl, who probably will have one of her first classical experiences (Mozart) when seeing it

4.0 out of 5 stars Good film shame about the sub-titles
A wonderful film which we saw many years ago. Spoilt by sub-tiles many of which appear momenetarily in disjointed form which meant it was difficult to follow

Romantic drama, just as good as when I first saw it years ago, And it doesn`t seem at all dated.

Yes, a beautiful film to watch, but (maybe because I am getting on a bit!) I found the frequent sloppy loving a bit boring. Read more
