From the Back Cover

ELVENBLOOD
A forbidden being, a prophecy fulfilled

Elven maiden Sheyrena an Treves wants more than an arranged marriage and the sheltered life as wife to a minor lord. She longs to be like Shana the Elvenbane – a half human, half elf – and flee from elven court to seek out a life with the dragons. And as the ruling Elvenlords begin a ruthless search for halfbloods, Sheyrena's drab life is about to be changed forever.

Elsewhere, Shana, the dragons and their wizard allies struggle to find a new stronghold. The conflict with the Elvenlords is far from over, but time is needed to devise a new strategy. Elven magic is strong and to defeat them they must become immune to their sorcery.

There is a way, but it could prove more perilous than a vile and sorcerous war with their elven adversaries.

"A splendid blend of the talents of two excellent storytellers"
ANNE McCAFFREY

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book with a very different twist 2 Feb 2001
Format:Paperback
Elvenblood is the sequel to Elvenbane. A fantasy book which has to be set on Earth many years after a nuclear war. It has been invaded by dragons and by elves. This is where it is different. No gentle friendly pointy eared elves, but mean nasty ones. In some ways bleak, but I get the sense that the elves are going to get their come uppanse in the future. If you want sweetness and light this isn't the book for you, but if you like your elves to be a lot more gritty you will like this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first book 20 Sep 2008
Format:Hardcover
A somewhat, how can you say, easy for the protagonist story. All the hitches that Shana encounters are overcome without much effort. However that's not to say its a bad book, for it has got its exciting moments (such as the dragon fight), witty dialogue, brilliant descriptions and interesting perspectives.
Shana grows increasingly mad with the older wizards, so when a chance to explore presents itself she is more then happy to grab it. With her faithful friends Kerman, Mero and Kalamedra she sets out to find allies far in the south. BUt their plans are ruined when they are captured and their future looks increasingly bleak.
Meanwhile a young elven maiden yearns to be free of her constricting life and wishes above all to see a dragon. When she is betrothed to a dullard sne eagerly joins her brother to escape and they begin to search for the famous wizards. However an old enemy seeks revenge.

I have long been a great fan of Andre Norton's writings. My treasured copies of her Witchworld series date back to my early teens in the 1960's. When I saw Elvenblood it was Andre Norton's rather than Mercedes Lackey's name that drew me to it. However, I was disappointed. there is absolutely no feel of the magical Norton style in this book. I found the story to be unimaginative, somewhat dull and not worthy of Andre Norton. The same criticism holds true for the characters. They had no spark to them. As the story progressed I never had the feeling that the main characters were in much danger. And this turned out to be the case. Anytime the 'baddies' seemed likely to get the upperhand they quickly had the carpet pulled from under them. The story itself ended with a rush as if Andre Norton knew it was substandard and wanted to be done with it as quickly as possible. I suspect that the bulk of the book is the work of Mercedes Lackey who, to my mind, is simply not in the league of Andre Norton as a writer of fantasy. Would I read this one again? No. Would I buy the others in the series on the basis of this book? Definitely not. It is very poor stuff. Andre Norton fans leave this one on the shelf where it belongs.
