Fun:
I loved panzer general, a really old hex based game that is turn based.

This is a turn based hex game as well, with a rpg fantasy theme. So don't expect a fast paced RTS game, this game requires thinking about before you even put a unit on the map. Tactics are the order of the day, get it wrong and you lovingly crafted level 5 archer gets a good thumping and dies................

Its saving grace is the way your units and heroes upgrade as their levels increase and you get to choose new skills for them. A level 10 mage is fairly brutal, large area of effect spells to nuke groups is something awesome to do.

I think its worse feature is the turn limit. I like to wipe out every thing on a map to max out my experience, but this game forces you to charge through a map like a charging bull. Get one move wrong and you can loose a gold award at the end. These give out goodies, so you need to do it.

Goodies! You can send a unit to a hex and get a "power up" be it a potion of healing or plus 1 range on an archer. You get these in the form of artifacts and they make a huge difference. A staff of AOE nukeage on a warrior is quite good, these can spend turns not attacking and this staff changes that, helping to get that gold award quicker. Artifacts can be swapped around your units before each level starts and adds another tactic to the game. Need some more defence on your tank unit? Pop in the right artifact and you have it.

Getting gold and finding all the artifacts is hard, and again causes a lot of reloading in order to find the correct way to do it. I liked the challenge of trying to do this every map but wish that the stupid turn feature wasn't so strict.

Aoe's are not nice when they hit your troops, which means spacing them out at the right time to disuade the AI from doing it, or at the least reducing the damge taken by your army.

The levels vary in your objectives, kill x to win, get from a to b, last so many turns of being swamped and add some interest, forcing you to use different tactics.

The graphics are not awesome, but they are enough for this sort of game. Get used to pop up boxes of speech, they get annoying after your tenth time of retrying a map.

I don't think this game is a 5 star game, but its not a bad one, I am glad I got it and if you like turn based hex games it is worth a look. Its not as if the market is flooded with games of this genre, so I think 3 stars covers it, an average game but so cheap I couldn't resist the purchase.

Hammy voice acting, over-the-top and slightly tacky cut-scenes, and a story you all heard before or frankly aren't really interested in hearing in the first place.

This doesn't sound like a good start to a review for which I have given 5 stars!

This game has a habit of sucking you in for just 1 more turn and before you know it, its 3 in the morning and you only have 4 hours to sleep before having waking up to get to work for that important meeting in the morning!

Do you play another turn, or do you go to bed?

This game combines many many good things from strategy war games we have seen before in the past.

Hero character gain new skills as they gain experience. They can also wield artifacts that have their own unique powers.
Artifacts can also be allocated to army units and they can be upgraded when new unit types become available and they also gain experience that offer new skills.
There are choices between each level as to which scenario to tackle next, and new choices open up depending on how well you have completed the previous level.

Anyone that has played any of the classic SSI Generals series (especially the brilliant Fantasy General) will feel right at home!

At the current price of £6.34 for the original game plus the expansion packs is brilliant value for money!

A fare challenge 3 Dec 2010
By Fnord
Fun:
Elven legacy (sequel to Fantasy wars) is one of those games that actually is challenging in a rewarding way. There is very little luck involved in this game, so when something goes wrong, it is your fault.

Much like a good game should, this game starts of relatively easy, with the first few missions being a real cakewalk, but it gets progressively hard as you get further into the game, and the last missions should prove a challenge to most people, even on normal. There are no insane difficulty spikes in this game, which only makes it feel more fare. The 3 expansions are not as well balanced, but they are still fun to play. Rangers was a bit on the easy side (on normal), while the other two offers a downright nail-biting challenge. But they are, again, fare.

It is not the most original game of all time though. It borrows heavily from Panzer general in many ways, so if you are familiar with that game, you should know what to expect.
