5 years since the release of the album that many believe to be her career's nadir, "Memoirs of an imperfect angel", her indifferent second Christmas album, and her rather disastrous stint on American Idol, Mariah Carey makes her comeback by just doing what she does best, and what her fans love her for. The "Elusive chanteuse" finds her at her most old school. So much that, this new album could be "The emancipation of Mimi part II", being a merger of her opposing images: the carefree skating teen at the park, the finger-wagging "ballaDiva" behind a mic in a gown, and the glamorous hip-hop-wannabe chick.

Kicking off with "Cry", with Mariah and a piano, it is like we are back in the early 90s; "Faded", a slow hip-hop flavoured jam, finds her pouring out with emotion; "Dedicated" and "Make it look good" are nostalgic 80s throwbacks; "Beautiful", a duet with Miguel, is a sexy guitar-driven midtempo; "Thirsty" sees Mariah sounding almost feisty, over hip-hop beats; 70s funky number "You don't know what to do" and "Meteorite"'s infectious disco vibe are among the album's highlights. Finally, in the same fashion of Beyonce and Shakira, "Supernatural" contains snippets of Mariah's baby children's laughter and speech; adorable, unbearable, but memorable nevertheless.

Her choice to cover George Michael's "One more try", is a smart one: backed by a gospel organ and choir, although she cannot surpass the haunting power of the original, she manages to impress with her carefully restrained dancing over the notes. In fact, MC's voice seems to be the focal point throughout this record, engaging completely to all songs, and resulting in her most melodic album in a very long time.

I personally love mariah and have each and every album but I am able to listen with a degree of impartiality. Her voice is and production immaculate and although she seems so happy personally she still sings of heartache and angst to perfection! This album ticks all the boxes, the hip hop is there, the ballads, the dance! Each time I play it I fall in love with another track, really hope there will be a remix album of it too. Album of the summer, why it doesn't get the airplay it deserves who knows...maybe it's because she wears too many clothes and isn't in her 20's!

I own everything this lady has ever done. I'm not sure why, but this album lacks something for me. She doesn't seem to let rip anymore - and I don't mean the cheesy ballads - it's like she's trying to over sing but without actually relaxing and letting go. And some of the tracks are just too over-produced with overly complex beats and arrangements.

I'll always love Mariah - she's still a genius writer and always will be - and overall, no other female artist comes close, but this one just wasn't what I hoped for.

Could you believe that Mariah Carey has been with us for almost quarter-of-a-century now? With her 14th (!) regular album, she proves that hard work pays off. Produced mostly in a way combining modern and retro sounds, she's sounding like no other superstar - currently she's more into old school than Beyonce, does not tamper with Lady Gaga or Adele and her composing skills do not let her slip into sameness which is sometimes typical for the likes of Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus or even Kelly Clarkson.

It's a bit hard to understand why she chose words from a drawing she did as a three-year-old as the title of the album and it is obvious that HER on the album cover art looks a fraction too flattering. But as for the music, it is more colorful and diverse than, for example, on the "Memoirs of Imperfect Angel". The big step forward from that, an otherwise good album, is that "Me" includes a couple of hit singles - the sleek "Beautiful" featuring Miguel, "Thirsty" with the excellent bridge hook, the Rodney Jerkins co-produced subtlety "You're Mine (Eternal)" or the grower "Money" (w/Fabolous) - all four with great radio potential (which, however, in the past few years has often gone unfulfilled with Mariah - maybe she's not IN VOGUE anymore no matter what she does).

One of the great tracks is certainly the nostalgic "Dedicated" ft Nas, sounding at once retro and hip (quite a feat nowadays). Excellent beats are also to be found here and there, as on the seductive "Make It Look Good", the pounding "You Don't Know What To Do" (with Wale) or the surprisingly giddy disco "Meteorite".

Such an underrated album, it's carefully and brilliantly crafted and deserves much more success.

1. Cry. 10/10
Beautiful opening to the album that just seems to get better and better over time

2. Faded 10/10
Produced and written by Mike WiLL Made-It, another grower track

3. Dedicated (featuring Nas) 10/10
One for the nostalgia, it's a great and enjoyable hip hop jam

4. #Beautiful (featuring Miguel) 10/10
The stunning lead single from the album, their vocals blend together perfectly to create this masterpiece!

5. Thirsty 10/10
A massive club hit, the production is flawless and is one of the best

6. Make It Look Good 9/10
A punchy, strong track that you shouldn't take seriously. It's there purely to sing along and dance to and is great fun!

7. You're Mine (Eternal) 10/10
Reminiscent of We Belong Together. This is beautifully produced and sung, watch out for the killer high note at the end, wow!!

8. You Don't Know What To Do (featuring Wale) 10/10
Why this wasn't one of the main singles in beyond me, it could be huge! Brilliant song

9. Supernatural (featuring DemBabies) 9/10
The instrumental to this song fits the lyrics with ease. It also features her children Morrocan and Monroe which some will love and some will hate

10. Meteorite 10/10
Another massive song that could have been something huge, super addictive!

11. Camouflage 9/10
Beautiful ballad with touching lyrics showing Mariah at her most vulnerable points

12. Money ($ * / ...) [featuring Fabolous] 9/10
Completely different to the rest of the album, it's catchy and includes some of the best whistle notes on the album

13.
