BEAUTIFUL SONGCRAFT 16 May 2003
By Pieter HALL OF FAME TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
All Elton John's early 70s masterpieces are collected here, from the elegant and sensitive Your Song and Daniel to the bouncy Honky Cat and the fast-paced Crocodile Rock. Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting is a rocker in similar vein, while Rocket Man and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road are beautiful ballads. Plus the famous Candle In The Wind which had many incarnations - this is the original, but there was a 1988 version too and of course, the Diana adaptation which by now must be the biggest selling single of all time. Although Elton John has created an impressive body of work in the years since, I still consider these songs to be his best. They hold a special emotional appeal for me. I know Your Song has been covered by many other artists but I'm surprised that not more of these elegantly crafted songs have been interpreted and taken up the charts by others.

How can you review an album? Especially a greatest hits one by the legend that is Elton John.

If you've never heard of him or his music I suggest you crawl out from under the rock you've been living under and buy this album.

The biggest down side to this album, and many greatest hit albums for that matter, is they tend to spread the songs out over numerous cd's. Although there is probably not a bad song on this album your favourites will be spread across numerous discs which can be frustrating as you tend to find you're listening to the 'weaker' songs more then the genuine greatest hits.

If you're a huge fan of the queen of pop then I whole heartedly recommend this album. If you have a flirting interest with him there are other greatest hit albums out there by the great man, which have less of the filler and more of the good stuff. One or two disc sets that maybe more suited to your needs.

As a gawky teenager who really didn't like pop music very much this was the record that started my record collection. As I played the Piano a friend of mine said heres something you might like.

What a great collection of hits. There isn't a bad track on here. Sure some have been spoilt a little by later releases and re-recordings, notably Candle In the Wind, but all the classics up to 1974 are here. My favourites are Border Song and Bennie and Jets. Border Song because it has that Gospel influence, and Bennie and the Jets as it features Eltons Piano playing to a greater degree than most of the other tracks.

To have it again on CD takes me back 36 years. Sure there are bigger and better compilations to get now, but this was the first, and for sentimental reasons remains my favourite.

The best Elton John songs were NEVER the hits
The idea here is to present all of Elton John's Top 10 hits from his early period, circa 1970-1974, so there is no arguing that this greatest hits collection does indeed do that. Read more
