Product Description

Elske was born into the cruel and barbaric Volkaric people. Raised by her wise and fearless grandmother, Elske seems destined to a fate of death maiden to the sadistic Volkking. When the time comes however, Elske is saved when her noble grandmother sacrifices her own life instead, telling Elske to run far away, and never return. So Elske's journey begins. Arriving in the city of Trastad in the North , Elske is given work as lady's maid to the aristocracy. Here she meets the headstrong Princess Beriel, who sees a kindred spirit in the wilful, passionate Elske. As Beriel seeks to reclaim the throne that is rightfully hers, she wants none other than Elske by her side in battle. In a final and compelling battle scene, Elske at last does assume the mantel of death maiden - but this time, the victory will be hers . . .

I'm a male and read this at age 25 (my sister burrowed it from the library). I mentioned the gender because the book might seem like a bit of a chick flick, with "girl power" undertones. And yes, it may well be described as one, but I really loved it. I really felt for the main character, Elske. A very strong-willed and strong-minded girl (partly as a result of a certain kind of naivety, perhaps). You just have to admire Elske's tenacity and courage in some of the situations (which are very believable). There are some slow and tedious patches, but mostly it is really engrossing and enjoyable to read. I was struck by the writing style, which was very stylized and artistic (though bright and clear). I haven't read any of Cynthia's other books, but I'm certain it was deliberately written in such way, to give it a more authentic feel...and it works wonderfully. I don't read much, but after reading this I've realised reading can be a really nice hobby. People have their tastes but I would recommend it.

It was a great read. I would recommend it to anyone who likes a quick, well written read with twists and turns.
Its not like a story i've read before and i didn't know what to expect, its fresh and isn't predictable.
Read it!

Elske does not have a good life, she is trapped in the terrible world of Volkking suffering great sadness, never having the opportunity to express her own feelings and never daring to complain she is totally miserable. When given the chance to escape this life for one of her own she takes the risk. She must pass the Volkaric soldiers and escape with the high risk of death. Never understanding the evil world in which she was trapped, "Why should he die?" she went to seek a better world.

I enjoyed this book although it is rather violent but a great tear jerker. I would recommend this book to others and advise perseverance at the beginning until you sink into it.
