I am 66 years old and was given the first two vols. to read by my grandaughter Julianna. I read the first to appease her and, then, could not put them down. I have read eight now and thank God that he gave Martha Finley the talent to put down on paper the appropriate scripture and characters that show us God's will for us. I got down on my knees and sobbed my heart out to the Lord, all the while apologizing for my own rebelliousness. I have 31 grandchildren and hope all will read the Elsie books (girls and boys alike). Yes, there are people in the world who believe in doing God's will and these books will never be out of date.

Elsie Dinsmore 21 Dec 2009
A Kid's Review
Format:Paperback
Hmmm, I can't quite decide whether I like this book or not. So here are a few pros and cons about 'Elsie Dinsmore':

What I liked about 'Elsie Dinsmore':
-It had a good story line.
-Some of the charachters were very interesting.
-It was great reading a book that was written so many years ago, but it cannot be compared to any of the old-time classics like 'Anne of Green Gables' or 'What Katy Did'.
-There was something about it that made me want to read the next book.

What I didn't like about 'Elsie Dinsmore':
-I disliked Elsie herself. She was not a very strong or life-like character. She was too sickly sweet and pious and her weepy outbursts are very annoying.
-The book was written in a very stiff style.
-I know it is supposed to be a book that teaches you to be good, but there are too many morals in it and some of them are very odd ie. you should always be meek and submit to your tyrant of a father!
-It has a strange way of bringing tears to your eyes. At first I thought I must feel sorry for 'poor little Elsie' but now I think I felt sorry for myself wanting to read such a pious book!
-I found it unrealistic.

So, that is my conclusion to 'Elsie Dinsmore'. Even though I fqound it annoying, I want to read on - maybe it isn't so bad afterall.

When I was 10 years old, my family received a large box in the mail containing books that my mom had ordered. In it was the first book of the Elsie Dinsmore collection. My mom handed the book to me and said, "Here, this is for you." I thanked her, curled up on our recliner, and started reading. I soon fell in love the book. It was so exciting, so wonderfully written, and I felt so much like I had jumped right into the book. I found book one not very interesting because of how cruel Elsie's father was to her. A friend of mine told me how excellent the next books were, and so I kept on reading. I am now thirteen years old, and the Elsie Dinsmore books are my favorite books I have ever read. Every once in a while I get a couple of books, and I now have 12 hard back books that I love so much. I am planning on saving them so that my children and then their children can enjoy a heartwarming, clean book. For those of you out there (I'd recommend kids ten years old and up) who are searching for a great book, I recommend this one above all others.
