5.0 out of 5 stars Atmospheric and Imaginitive- everything an RPG should be!, 9 Nov 2003
By A Customer
This roleplaying game is one of the best fantasy games around. It is a dark and gritty game set in the world of Michael Moorcock's albino hero, Elric. The world is Earth millennia ago when the planet is nothing but an island of order floating in an eternal sea of unformed chaos. The planet has been dominated by the cat-like, sadistic and hedonistic Melniboneans for ten thousand years although now their power wains with their increasing decadence. Into this ornate world the player characters venture as warriors, explorers, sorcerors and traders- they may end up as philosopher kings, mighty enchanters or merely dead.

The game system is an adaption of Chaosium's house system and works amazingly well, being fast, realistic and capable of dealing with heroically powered characters. The majority of dice rolls are percentile based.

The best feature of the game is the imaginitive demon-based magic system that derives from the earlier editions of the game (`Stormbringer')- this is almost unique in RPGs, still, and works astoundingly well and is both effective and wreathed in atmosphere. Want a magic sword? summon one! or bind a demon into a normal sword- but that now intelligent weapon may well have its own agenda and needs that must be satisfied...

Also included are a large selection of minor enchantments and spells that enhance rather than augment a character's abilities- all useful intheir own right but not as atmospheric as the pervasive demon-magic.

Quite simply a superbly written and produced game- it is not as true to the Elric saga as it often insists (and often seems to fawn to rather too greatly), but is an awesome tribute none the less. Worth buying even if you haven't read the books as it can be easily adapted to just about any fantasy milieu with a minimum of fuss, and even to other settings. Absolutely recommended except for one thing: why oh why did they change the evocative and dynamic name of `Stormbringer' to the childish-feeling title of `ELRIC!'?
Buy it anyway- its great!
