Product Description

Product Description

In July 1955 Ruth Ellis was the last women to hang in England after shooting her lover David Blakeley outside a Hampstead pub. The evidence against Ellis was overwhelmning, but as the glamorous mother of young children she inspired considerable sympathy, and the press and public campaigned for her reprieve. This Crime Archive title explores the tragic consequences of her abusive relationship through material held at The National Archives, including police files, newspaper cuttings, psychiatrist's reports and Ellis's letters.

David Blakely was described by one of his associates, Cliff Davis, as 'a good looking, well-educated, supercilious shit', who 'wasn't averse to poncing, and certainly ponced off Ruth' (Marks and van den Bergh). Read the first page

This series of small format books published by The National Archives in their, `Crime Archive' set should not be dismissed as trivial because of their diminutive size. Each book, of about one hundred pages, deals with a landmark case in the history of British criminal law. They are very well written by established authors, beautifully presented and each contains a number of illustrations often taken directly from the Archive. The volume concerned with the case of Ruth Ellis, who was hanged in July 1955, is no exception in that it is very well written and the facts presented with outstanding lucidity. The story of the murder and the subsequent court case are clearly described. The legal defence of Ellis is considered and how it might have been modified to increase the chances of her sentence being commuted. The impact of the hanging of Ellis and how it contributed to changes in the law, in particular, how it led to the possible plea of `diminished responsibility' being introduced into English law in 1957 and the eventual abolition of the death penalty in 1969. This is certainly an informative and interesting short read and is highly recommended.
