4.0 out of 5 stars Formative Carter - to age 73, 3 Jun 2009
By N. E. M. Goulder (Saffron Walden, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Nonesuch's tribute to the 100-year-old Elliott Carter takes the form of a four-disc collection which substantially reissues some of the trail-blazing recordings they made of his music in earlier decades. I have the vinyls of several of these, notably the Composers Quartet playing the first two string quartets, pioneering performances of huge distinction.
My guess is that if you are not hugely familiar with this groundbreaking composer's work, this set will make a very good starting point. The first disc contains the seminal Piano Sonata, originally written in 1945 when Carter was beginning to wean himself away from the idea of trying too hard to compose approachable music, here in the 1982 revision. I don't feel I learn massively from the other smaller pieces on this disc but any weaknesses in content here are amply made up in the following three discs.
The second disc has the pivotal 1948 Cello Sonata, still an intriguing mixture of styles as Carter transparently faces his own career's crossroads; and the big-boned structure of the first Quartet, easily the most expansive of the five and to many listeners the easiest on the ear.
The third disc moves us on to the 1955 Variations for Orchestra, also an excellent piece to build one's feeling for Carter's music vocabulary in advance of the big plunge which took place from 1959 onwards. The Composers come up trumps again with the Second Quartet and then Kalish and friends deliver what's still one of the catalogue's finest performances of the 1961 Double Concerto.
Finally we get to the early 1980's with Night Fantasies, the exuberant Triple Duo and Jan de Gaetani in lovely voice for In Sleep In Thunder.
The later music is undoubtedly more challenging and I certainly have quite musical friends who find everything after say 1955 a bit bewildering. But you will find this set rewarding even if you only listen as far as that break point.
One cavil - I know Nonesuch have a fabulous account of the 1975 Duo for Violin and Piano which they could surely have found space to include here. That too is a key staging post for the later music.
But lots to enjoy here.
