    3.0 out of 5 stars High spec, low expectations, 29 Aug 2006
    I was really apprehensive buying this DVD player due to the brand name, no other reviews and the high spec and low price. No other DVD player on the market has a similar spec with a DVB tuner, 160 GB, DVD rw, USB connect and divx/mp3 player. Also it lets you copy your entire mp3 and film collection onto the hard disk (or so it says). I've had this for a week now and feel it's the right time to tell people about this little gem

    Firstly aesthetics. It doesn't look to special, it's slim and a range of connections are well disguised behind the controls on the front. In short, the DVD player doesn't look expensive and the bright blue light on the front isn't the most attractive thing in my entertainment system rack.

    The first thing I did with the player was copy my music library across. I tried to connect my USB 40gb iriver mp3 player via the USB connection and transfer files this way, the GUI was fairly easy to use and I didn't have a problem using it, but transferring loads of mp3 files was a struggle, I had to copy over about 4-5 albums at a time else the system crashed... I tried to copy from dvd-rw from my pc and this was easier but any more than 10 albums at a time caused another crash. Hopefully new firmware will sort this.

    Next I tried to copy divx films onto the hard disk. This was very disappointing. Any file larger than 200mb wouldn't copy! I tried from USB and DVD but to no avail. I kept getting a very unhelpful "copy failed" message. Hopefully a firmware fix...

    Watching smaller files from the hard disk, or larger straight from DVD or from the USB device was great and performed just as expected. I used to own a kiss player and fast forward and rewind never worked, but on this system it is flawless. But if you want to turn the player off halfway through a film, the player doesn't remember, hopefully new firmware can fix this like the kiss players

    The next area was the TV tuner, finding the local non digital terriestal channels was easy to set up and works flawlessly, but the digital tuner was another matter. I live in London and there are now 100's of digital channels and radio stations available through DVB but this player only has space for 70. Once it's found 70 it starts deleting the first channels it's found! For me that meant BBC. I haven't worked out how to replace the channels already stored with the ones I want, so I had to find a weaker ariel then search and store again, which means I only have about 30 channels and not all of the best ones. Again hopefully new firmware can fix this.

    The EPG guide isn't amazing and takes a while to show up for each channel and it never says what you're watching unless you press the guide (unlike sky or a media center pc). But timed recordings are taking from the EPG and work superbly. It's very easy to use.

    Finally pausing live TV, annoyingly, turning on the player defaults to recording onto the DVD, which doesn't work with pausing TV! You have to turn on the hdd option before you can pause, but once you have its superb and seamless.

    In summery, for the price you can't get a more compressive DVD player, it does almost as much as a media center pc and under £260! Its easy to use and does everything is says on the tin, but the problem is attention to detail, it's as though Ellion have rushed to get this device out and left to many bugs and errors. But I think many of these can be fixed by updated firmware, but doing a search for this doesn't bode well for past machines and im not sure if any firmware update would exist in the future, where as a kiss DVD player would have an update every 2-3 months.

    This is a great piece of kit for the money and if the smaller errors I have mentioned don't affect you, then you wont be disappointed, but if they do, then to find a similar device with the same spec and hopefully flawless operation, then you will have to shell out at least double the cost of this player. I'm very happy with mine and just hoping firmware updates are in the pipeline.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Good value for such a high spech machine, 11 Sep 2006
    By Nillson H (Bracknell, Berkshire) - See all my reviews
    It had been a while until the machine came to my door after the purchase booking and it seems to be the machine that works to around 90% of my expectation.

    Setting-up is user-friendly. TV channel scanning needs to be done on both modes ;firstly in analogue mode and then in Digital mode.

    At digital scanning, it would normally capture around 50 TV channels and around 20-30 radio channels which I am not bothered about anyhow. Out of the 50TV channels, I have around 35 viewable channels which is better than my freeview box which only shows less than 20 channels in my area. It depends on the power of signal and I found that sometimes it would capture around 20 more TV channels but those channels would go when signal is weak. Digital TV picture quality is superb.

    I had difficulties on re-organising DTV channels as they came on in no particular order so I had to allocate each channel one by one in the menu screen which was time consuming. I contacted the service company Goodies and they sent me a firmware upgrade file which solved the problem. After the upgrade, the channels came on in correct order i.e BBC1, BBC2, ITV1... Channel 5, ITV2, BBC3 etc. The Radio channels appeared at the bottom which made my life easy.

    Other goods points are ;
    -The one touch timer recording from the program list of EPG
    -Good HDD editing capabilites such as split, combine, segment etc so you can edit them easily to your needs
    -Small screen display while you watch TV, recorded programs etc
    -being able to record TV program while you watch DVD films or programs stored onto HDD
    -USB port behind the slide in on the front, thru which I have transferred DVix files to HDD successfully

    Weak points are ;
    - Seems to struggle to read - R/RW blank discs but on +R/RW discs, it is more reliable
    - When the blank disc is put in, file menu screen would come on instead of DVD screen menu and I found that it can be ignored as it does not make any difference.
    - Takes a bit longer time for loading disc and when it cannot read discs, it becomes locked up

    Generally I am happy to have this high featured machine at the bargained price.

    2.0 out of 5 stars Good spec but ultimately disappointing, 2 Jan 2007
    By A. Moore - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
    This box promised much - the versatility of an HDD-based recorder with the ability to back up to DVD for the things that you want to keep a little longer. However, it proved to be a disappointment. The tuner only found about two-thirds of the stations available in my area; the EPG is really slow - to the point of being unuseable in my view - and poorly thought out. Build quality is relatively poor - and the DVD drive is very noisy in operation.

    My advice would be to invest in a Humax box or similar which is a much better thought out piece of kit.

    Maybe if they work on the software and improve the quality of the fan and DVD drive, then this could work because the concept is great. However, I wouldn't take the plunge just yet.
