Book Description

29 April 2013

'It's never too early to get little'uns interested in healthy eating, so instead of cooking for the kids, why not cook with them?' - Reveal

As featured in The Times, Ella's Kitchen is the fastest growing brand in the UK baby food sector and this new title, Ella's Kitchen: The Cookbook: The Red One, is the first in a series of books aimed at creating nutritious, convenient food that kids (and their parents) will love.

100 yummy recipes to inspire big and little cooks, ranging from the easiest of snacks and light meals that can be rustled up in minutes to delicious and satisfying dinners. Interesting twists and clever shortcuts, such as salmon fillets baked in parcels and sweet and sour prawns, make life as easy as possible for busy parents. For weekends and holidays, when there is a bit more time available, there are leisurely breakfast recipes such as Blueberry Pancakes and more involved cooking projects such as a Pasta Weekend.

With an emphasis on involving kids as much as possible, the book includes easy prep tasks throughout, as well as fun activities, from growing your own window-box plants to getting creative with vegetable prints. Colour-in pages and stickers also mean that kids will love it as much as their parents do.

Content's includes...

First foods for tiny taste buds

From must to mash & beyond

Learning about food

Yummy lunches and speedy snacks

Dee-licious dinners

Perfect puds

Scrummy treats

5.0 out of 5 stars Fab! 2 Jan 2014

I've never written a review of a cookbook before but this one is so good I felt I should. I've got numerous baby/toddler cookbooks - annabel karmel, BLW cookbook and river cottage and this is my favourite. Plenty of recipes and not too much extra 'blurb', all simple but creative recipes - good for me to cook for my 1 yr old (and myself and husband!) and will be great to use as he gets older to start introducing him to simple cooking and baking. Really pleased with this impulse purchase!

We are in the process of trying to get our daughters to eat 'better' food and to
educate their palates. This book has made quite a contribution to the task.

We started off by leaving the book on the table for the girls to just browse as
they might a comic or magazine. The first thing we noticed is how much they
paid attention to the many pictures of children eating food!

One of the first recipes we tried was the fruity cheese on toast (very easy) and
we then made teeny weeny fruit muffins, equally straight-forward. Over the last
few weeks we have allowed the girls to choose food they like the look of and if
we have the ingredients we have a go at it.

I don't think it's particularly helpful to list the recipes that the girls liked (or did
not like), but everything we tried came out as the authors intended. I imagine
most parents try to get their children involved in the kitchen, and clearly a large
dollop of common sense is required when allocating tasks to children.

Each double-page recipe has a photograph of the outcome, a list of ingredients
(and sometimes suggestions for alternatives), step-by-step instructions and a
'Can I help?' section offering suggestions for tasks that younger children may be
able to contribute to. Timings and servings are also clearly displayed.

There are lots of other fun things for the children to read and do in the book, for
example stickers, a 'Cool Kiddie café' and flour dough fun.

Overall it's been a great success, and our girls have indeed tasted a much greater
range of food than we might have without this book. I'd say it's definitely worth
considering if you'd like to increase your children's interest in food and have some
fun at the same time.

Great recipes and ideas, I have used it several times already for my 10 month old. The recipes are mostly for older kids but I find I can chop up some of the dishes enough for her and the others will come in handy as she grows.

I have two criticisms, the first is that the cooking times for meat are ridiculously short. The meat has no chance of getting tender enough for young mouths/tummies to deal with.

Secondly, some recipes are unnecessarily complicated and involve cooking various vegetables separately before adding to a dish when they could have just as easily been thrown in together. Doing it the way it says in the book would take a lot longer (and involve a lot more pans!)

A good choice if you are already quite handy in the kitchen and can work out alternatives. There is a good balance of vegetables, protein and carbs in the main meals so you know your baby will not get hungry before the next meal and has had nutritious & enjoyable food. Some of the recipes and snack ideas are so tasty I made them again for my husband and me with added spices and salt etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars A proper family cooking book 3 Sep 2014
Format:Hardcover
This is an amazing cookbook for the whole family. My kids are fairly fussy but we have tried most recipes in this book which is a first for me as I find a lot of the cook books aimed at families are not very family friendly - this is actually a bit gripe of mine. I don't want a recipe that isn't practical I need something that I can flick through quickly and build a shopping list for my online supermarket order. This book fits that category. Another thing that annoys me about the "family" cook books is how unhealthy some of the meals are - full of fat and sugar. This book seems to avoid loads of fat/butter/sugar. The banana bread is amazing and has no added sugar (well it has apple juice but only 2 tables spoons), comparing that to other banana bread recipes that have 50grams + of added sugar in addition to the bananas (which are 50% sugar anyway). This book has been used every week for at least 1 recipe, its great. I hope there are more books to come (I have the other Yellow book too).

4.0 out of 5 stars So many yummy things to try... 28 Oct 2013

This is a lovely book! Geared towards preparing food and making meals with children in mind but I think it would work well for anyone looking for a nice, easy beginners cookbook too. Lots and lots of great pictures throughout the book and they all make the food look so tempting and fun to make.

The food and the recipes and the dietary info are all wonderfully presented but I think the biggest appeal of this book is that it's something that parents/carers can involve their children with when cooking/baking for the family. It's a very 'hand's on' type of book and actively encourages children to get involved.

There's nothing too taxing and with a little supervision even quite young children can help make the dishes and snacks. It's a wonderful book to get children interested in food, both preparing it and eating it.

And, it comes with a cute little carrot bookmark, slipped inside the back cover.

Very nicely presented and well worth investing in.
