Book Description

Sep 2002
Ella Minnow Pea is a girl living happily on the fictional island of Nollop off the coast of South Carolina. Nollop was named after Nevin Nollop, author of the immortal pangram,* “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.” Now Ella finds herself acting to save her friends, family, and fellow citizens from the encroaching totalitarianism of the island’s Council, which has banned the use of certain letters of the alphabet as they fall from a memorial statue of Nevin Nollop. As the letters progressively drop from the statue they also disappear from the novel. The result is both a hilarious and moving story of one girl’s fight for freedom of expression, as well as a linguistic tour de force sure to delight word lovers everywhere.

*pangram: a sentence or phrase that includes all the letters of the alphabet

4.0 out of 5 stars A very helpfull tool for Preachers and Teachers 19 July 2001
This is really a very delightfull book, full of a variety of stories, jokes and words of wisdom. It can be of great help to preachers and teachers who are looking for some "salt and pepper" for their sermons and lectures. But it is also very entertaining reading in itself, and can be recommended for those who are in need of being cheered up a bit.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read 10 Feb 2004
A must buy! It's full of clean humorous wit and observations. This will really support any youth worker. The messages are strong and thought provoking. Its layout is clear and by no means a heavy read. Well done J John, a compelling read.

A very funny but intriguing book. This plot could only take place in the United States of America where it has an armish quality

4.0 out of 5 stars What delicious fun 14 Mar 2014

This is a very silly story that I laughed my way through. Imagine an island where certain letters of the alphabet are banned for public use. Imagine a place where, for one reason or another, all the letters become suspect and eventually banned. This is such a story. And the title alone is worth the price of entry into this little dessert of a book. It will make you smile.
